And I don’t know which one of them it was, but one was a right entitled prick when it came to parking.

So we’re looking at mid 2030s at the earliest for something that has been promised to various degrees by different governments for the best part of a decade?

Piddington Parish Council chair Tim McNally previously thanked Elon Musk, a vocal backer of Tommy Robinson, for supporting his campaign against the asylum centre. McNally wrote on his PiddingtonRoars X account: “Elon Musk just gave a tiny Oxfordshire village a global megaphone. Thank you @elonmusk.”

‘Danny Tommo’, leader of the balaclava-clad blackshirt rallies, says he will travel to Piddington “in the coming days” following the Parish Council’s stunt referendum: “I want to hear about safety concerns for their women and children.” Tommo was jailed for two years in 2016 for a knifepoint kidnap.

The councillor who chairs Piddington Parish Council, near Bicester, says that yesterday’s stunt referendum – in which the village voted to leave the UK in protest against an asylum centre – was “an example of democracy in operation”. Tim McNally himself gained his role without a contested election.

Agreed but on the other side, too many people take the complexity as justification to do nothing or work to preserve the status quo with tinkering around the edges. And also, when it comes to protecting life, any reasoning of “it’s complicated” is frankly a cop out.

I think the worst part of Labour's response to the fascist mobilisation is Andy Burnham's absence. He's the most popular politician in the country, with social media reach and actual powers of persuasion, and he's saying nothing in public. He can actually be of use here but he's choosing not to

Still treated it as usual political coverage and you know, not the real threat they present. Journalists in this country really can’t help themselves. You minimise stuff you shouldn’t, give overblown coverage to things you shouldn’t, & get defensive when people call you out on it.

There’s something so inhumanly cynical about piggybacking on the mourning of the death of a beloved advocate for children’s literacy by donating the first entry in your own series of books to drive up sales of the other books, market a tv show, and make people forget you sued Amnesty International

So, I have to ask: you’re okay with horrific bigotry and vileness having constraints in general day-to-day life but in academia it is desirable to be a free for all?
020
Jamie @jdodger4.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
If “academic freedom” existed in a vacuum, yeah, sure but history is replete with atrocities that have stemmed from awful people using awful people’s work as justification. So yeah, defend all academic freedom but don’t act upset when tyrants act on it.

I do agree but the British press is gonna British press and being in that place won’t change them. And even ‘progressives’ within journalism in the UK are likely going to be opposed to anything meaningful happening to prevent hounding coverage in the future.

Like, we can’t continue to rely on a news organisation’s “decency” to stop and counter unethical and harmful practices. But any attempt at regulation will be opposed. As will ad boycotts. They’ve no incentive to change so likely won’t.

Jamie @jdodger4.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I get that the Guardian NUJ will rightly prioritise its members but this statement doesn’t really inspire hope of change. Calling “some” of the criticism “genuine” and just saying it is “right to seek to learn lessons”. No commitment to do so and gives sense of minimising the criticism.

Jamie @jdodger4.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
And this is no disparaging of them, but the decent ones who’ve left legacy/mainstream journalism to focus on actually good journalism has only accelerated this, imv. Am in no way saying that those ones are to blame but it’s just a destructive feedback loop.

Periodic reminder that Kathleen Stock unapologetically crowdfunded for neo-Nazi bullies in their calamitous libel case against me.
Tweet by Kathleen Stock sharing a far-right crowdfunder by Daniel 'DC' Miller and Nina Power entitled 'Targeted, harassed and falsely labelled a fascist'.

Reply by Mallory Moore: "Seriously, why are you supporting a *not even very well veiled* fascist here? This feels reminiscent of the way you've supported the work of homophobes and not once let your following know maybe that was a mistake. Why do you keep doing this?"

Reply by Kathleen Stock: "Stop believing all you read online about people. And stop casually debasing the word "fascist" for role playing purposes - one day you might be unlucky enough to meet a real one."Tweet by Kathleen Stock: "Nina [Power] is an original, stimulating, light-footed writer who always makes me think; I'm very happy I supported her crowdfunder a few years back; and I get a lot from @compactmag_ where she is editor, and the podcast she contributes to. Keep doing what you do Nina, you are great."

Reply by Will: "Apart from the Neo-Nazi shit, sure". Embedded tweet by Luke Turner including antisemitic imagery: "During cross-examination, Nina Power & Daniel Miller both admitted they had written anonymously for the Parallax Optics site--a fact they had previously denied--with their *own pleadings* having characterised the account as "espousing and disseminating abhorrent antisemitic views."

Reply by Kathleen Stock: "Whatever the deeper truth here, I absolutely would not take Turner's word for it. And I would say more, but the last time I mentioned his name on Twitter, fairly benignly, I got threatened with legal action."

Reply by Will: "*Deeply* embarrassing tweet when you can literally read the judgment". Embedded tweet by Luke Turner: "A full copy of the High Court's Judgment, which I invite you to read, is available here: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Miller-and-Power-v-Turner-08.11.23.pdf "

Reply by Will: "Still, it's only antisemitism"

Reply by Kathleen Stock: "Sorry Will, I'm not doing trial by twitter. You do it if you want. I've had enough of that shit to last a life time. Feel free to infer all the dastardly conclusions."

Now, I do like the X Men movies but bar a couple of them, they were basically the Wolverine universe and every other beloved character was basically nerfed and put on the sidelines. And finally, to get back to the point, movie Rogue in particular, should get the cure if she wants to.

Film Storm is awful, and that’s no disrespect to Berry, she wasn’t given anything apart from in X2 where she summoned numerous tornadoes, which was pretty good. Now X-Men ‘97 Storm, she deservedly gets her flowers. Same goes for Rogue; bad film, great tv series.
