This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊
Line graph time series of daily global mean sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. This year is currently at record high for this time of year. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1, and the graphic is created by Climate Central at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings.

SEC should investigate recent claims, cancel IPOs till clarified. The federal government should also seriously look into nationalizing them if things are so dangerous internally. Their boards and leadership should also be thrown out (equity to zero) for negligence and endangering public safety.

Two things fascinate me about this area/problem: a) interactive theorem provers/type checking being able to produce signal, and b) that, in this particular case, the problem involves a lot of translation between math and Lean. There is truly little Lean code out there for learning (cf js or Python)

I would love to know what proportion of existing Lean code the proof of FLT represents. I bet it’s at least 10%. And I find that quite remarkable.

I was making a related argument here: realizable.substack.com/p/seeming-li...
Cautious observers will be wary of reifying the state, i.e., raising it from the status of a theoretical entity introduced only order to save the phenomena to something that is real in the sense of Ian Hacking, i.e., an entity with causal powers that we can manipulate. This sounds somewhat like behaviorism, but behaviorists like B.F. Skinner were simply hedging their bets: All talk of neural correlates of external behavior has to wait until we have made sufficient progress in neurophysiology.

“Chain of Thought” is the tape of a Turing Machine. It is not supposed to mean anything. It is calculations spewed out in tokens by design. But since the symbols look like language, some can’t help but try to interpret it. 2/x

The sort of floods that we saw in Nepal will unfortunately become more and more common across the area. They have already been happening a lot more over the past few years, just not at this scale (you had one in Uttarkashi last year, Joshimath the year before and so on).

🚨 Preliminary daily data shows we just broke the all-time highest global sea surface temperature in this record... Download high-resolution graphic at zacklabe.com/climate-chan.... This data (extrapolar ocean) is provided by @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social ERA5. 🌊
Graph showing daily global mean sea surface temperatures for 2026. This is also compared to the daily data from the 1981-2010 average and 1991-2020 average. Annotations are also shown to the current year with the other years from 1940 to 2026. There is a seasonal cycle. There is a long-term warming trend. 2023 and 2024 are also indicated, which were the warmest years on record. Data is from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis and updated through 21 August 2026.
