A conversation reminded me of this quote from a writing by Pyarelal Nayyar (it wasn't meant to be for 02 October, but it was of course).

They use 'bond vigilantes' (even embarrassingly making them sound like Charles Bronson) for a reason I guess. This is very much heading towards something like the UK Gilt crisis of 2022 at this point, but at a more global scale.

Reading a book that enumerates evidence for the Missoula floods, and how it got embedded in American Indian flood myths. I had no idea about the scale. Think of the Nepal floods, but happening over a few days, and the discharge volume equivalent to several Amazons.

One thing I missed about UChicago for quite some time was that this was never a problem there. People in campus were usually very well dressed. Then I went to a factory which calls itself a university in MA, which had a plurality of borderline hobos around.

It's crazy to think that in 2020, 10 year treasuries were at 0.32%. Yesterday the Treasury’s official daily par yield was 5.18%, and the market's trading around 5.17% today. The same people who bought houses in the mid 2010s, and had usual income increases in the interim, won't be able to buy today.

This already uses old school ML. The trial is for V940, which was tested on around 1300 patients who had the cancer surgically removed. It is a personalized mRNA-based cancer vaccine. So it's not really the usual molecular drug, you end up producing a different medicine for every person's tumour.

This shocked me because while many seem comfortable with the instrumental use of math (definitions, notation, theorems, optimization objectives, probability language, linear algebra, whatever), but did not seem to have given much thought to the conceptual provenance of the language itself.

They were obv easy to target because of a large (but recent) presence of uncouth "nationalistic" louts.

Either a lot of this European activity is a coordinated show (e.g. by planted reports) for real solidarity, or they have real intelligence for a Russian false flag op. Regardless, if Russia had been able to achieve even half of their objectives in Ukraine, it'd have happened long ago.

These accounts exist aplenty. You could think of the entire Bourbaki project as concerned with understanding at a structural level, not problems. What is the right conceptual framework in which this theorem becomes natural? The emphasis was on definitions and conceptual architecture.

Also, saying such things does not mean one takes the new landscape lightly. For example, I am sure that it's much easier already to bring down grids (which can be catastrophic) and networks of entire countries (e.g. like the Russian attack on Estonian systems in 2007, which paralyzed them for days).
