Most of my math friends share exactly this concern. It is very sad that we could be enjoying a very nice *tool*, yet we are here in the middle of a nonsensical mess.

where have you gone, Herbert Simon, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you etc etc.
2. I shall disclaim responsibility for this particular choice of terms. The phrase “artificial intelligence,” which led me to it, was coined, I think, right on the Charles River, at MIT. Our own research group at Rand and Carnegie Mellon University have preferred phrases like “complex information processing” and “simulation of cognitive processes.” But then we run into new terminological difficulties, for the dictionary also says that “to simulate” means “to assume or have the mere appearance or form of, without the reality; imitate; counterfeit; pretend.” At any rate, “artificial intelligence” seems to be here to stay, and it may prove easier to cleanse the phrase than to dispense with it. In time it will become sufficiently idiomatic that it will no longer be the target of cheap rhetoric.

In town (Amherst, MA), there used to be a Spanish-language story time for kids. All the stories were about immigrants and farmers living really hard lives, with lots of kids, etc. Annoying!

I’m enjoying the workshop “Emerging Directions in Probabilistic Modeling.” I’m glad that tiny venues (cf 60k submissions) are still alive, and they’re clearly a good way to foster scholarly discussion. However, as always, the geographically non-uniform distribution worries me.

I strongly agree on this, except for the “automatically” part. IMO, one should not expect that to happen.

This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊
Line graph time series of daily global mean sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. This year is currently at record high for this time of year. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1, and the graphic is created by Climate Central at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings.

ISBA has released a statement on compulsory Article Processing Charges (APCs). Open access should remove barriers for readers without creating new ones for authors. We call for publishing models that are both open and equitable. Read more: isba-bulletin.github.io/ISBABulletin...

There are so many of them in Buenos Aires. It wasn’t like that 30 years ago. They’ve expanded their territory a lot farther south. Last time I went there, it was interesting to see the caranchos going to the parakeets’ nests every evening to steal eggs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crested...

Yeah! I also love the interactive figures for teaching a lot. For my classes, students need to fill a reading check one hour before the class. Sometimes I’ll use that hour to create an interactive visualization of the most common misconception. (thanks LLM!)

SEC should investigate recent claims, cancel IPOs till clarified. The federal government should also seriously look into nationalizing them if things are so dangerous internally. Their boards and leadership should also be thrown out (equity to zero) for negligence and endangering public safety.

The more things get memeified, by more people (especially those who should know better), the more stupid and memeified the world becomes. Everything is just a meme to project your insecurities, political opinions, and personal traumas on.

Two things fascinate me about this area/problem: a) interactive theorem provers/type checking being able to produce signal, and b) that, in this particular case, the problem involves a lot of translation between math and Lean. There is truly little Lean code out there for learning (cf js or Python)

Javier Burroni @jburroni.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Related to this: a year or a year and a half ago, Claude wasn’t able to generate any proper Lean 4 code, unlike GPT. They did some very serious steering.

I would love to know what proportion of existing Lean code the proof of FLT represents. I bet it’s at least 10%. And I find that quite remarkable.

I wonder if the increase in income at the top is not a consequence of wealthier people moving in. With very high values, this effect should be analysed.

Javier Burroni @jburroni.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Thanks! I found the article slightly odd for two reasons: i) I thought that the conclusion it reached was the most common one (I’ve held it for many years now), and ii) it presents a dichotomy of origin that I’m not so sure everybody agrees on. The described sets are not disjoint.

I was making a related argument here: realizable.substack.com/p/seeming-li...
Cautious observers will be wary of reifying the state, i.e., raising it from the status of a theoretical entity introduced only order to save the phenomena to something that is real in the sense of Ian Hacking, i.e., an entity with causal powers that we can manipulate. This sounds somewhat like behaviorism, but behaviorists like B.F. Skinner were simply hedging their bets: All talk of neural correlates of external behavior has to wait until we have made sufficient progress in neurophysiology.

“Chain of Thought” is the tape of a Turing Machine. It is not supposed to mean anything. It is calculations spewed out in tokens by design. But since the symbols look like language, some can’t help but try to interpret it. 2/x

The sort of floods that we saw in Nepal will unfortunately become more and more common across the area. They have already been happening a lot more over the past few years, just not at this scale (you had one in Uttarkashi last year, Joshimath the year before and so on).

I know that I’m very biased, but the Argentinian case is relevant in here. the crisis the began in the 2010s was in big part due to issues with energy. And every right-wing government tries to destroy the nuclear plan when they get to have the chance (as we are now seeing).

Graph showing daily global mean sea surface temperatures for 2026. This is also compared to the daily data from the 1981-2010 average and 1991-2020 average. Annotations are also shown to the current year with the other years from 1940 to 2026. There is a seasonal cycle. There is a long-term warming trend. 2023 and 2024 are also indicated, which were the warmest years on record. Data is from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis and updated through 21 August 2026.

I'm glad you brought up this example, which I also use. It is too bad that people (in general) don't like to read about the history of CS. They would be surprised by how early AI became an engine for CS research and how much it drove the field.
