New inflation data out today and wow what can you say about these Alberta car insurance rates other than ... wow. 😳
Car insurance prices in Alberta have far outpaced every other province

Alberta is now at an index value of more than 400. No other province is above 250.

An index value of 100 is equal to the average price for insurance in Canada over all 12 months of 2002.

Alberta’s population boom has added nearly 700,000 people since 2021, but municipal funding has been cut in real terms, leaving cities to absorb the cost of growth through rising property taxes and strained infrastructure. Writer Tim Querengesser explores: ow.ly/f9xy50Z1UTL

A chart with 2 graphs. First, a flow diagram which shows the movement between wealth quintiles between 2 survey waves in 2011 (left bar) and 2023 (right bar). The size of the streams between these stacked bars are sized proportionally to the share of households which moved between the connected segments. As the post implies, most movement happes in the 2nd to 4th quintile, while the 5th and highest quintile as well as the 1st/lowest quintile remain rather stable. The second part is a matrix showing the percentage values for each combination of 2011 and 2023 quintile.

A heatmap reveals the most common 4 digit PIN numbers, visualised from the data leaked from several large data breaches. The horizontal axis plots the frequency of the first two digits, the vertical axis the second two digits. Clear (and somewhat predictable) patterns emerge from the dataset. A diagonal line of ‘heat’ from bottom left to top right reveals people choosing double digits (2323, 6868 etc). A strong horizontal line at the 19 point shows people using their birth year as a PIN code (1971, 1998 etc). And a large amount of heat in the bottom left shows how people commonly use their birthdate in a MM/DD or DD/MM format. The most common code in the set is 1234.

The data spans from 1916 to 1963, covering biplanes, monoplanes, and jet aircraft. The trend shows a steady increase in both speed and altitude over time as aviation technology advanced.
