Re-upping reccomedation: Everything @kbspangler.com has put out. There's something there for everyone. From cyborg detective novels to sword and sorcery comics to manic ninjas hanging out with ghosts across multiple formats. The Rachel Peng novels were my favorites, and a good starting place imho.

When I read the title, I thought "clickbait nonsense"; Then I saw what books they were talking about, and thought "No, that actually checks out, I agree with the clickbait nonsense this time" :D You definitely should read Infomocracy and the Centenal Cycle trilogy by Malka Older

I think, having caught the last SideQuested, that I've finally read everything that @kbspangler.com has released. What a ride! Genre and medium-hopping madness! But all of it was solid, fun, and worth the time. I recommend starting with the Rachel Peng novels. Digital Divide is the first one.

Just watched My Stepmother is an Alien. I appreciate a good, silly, kind of bad movie. Sometimes I forget how strange the 80s were. The past really is a foreign country. Which makes this a foreign film, I suppose. Sounds very high-brow when you frame it like that.

I think airlines should ask passengers for their breadth measurement, so they can stagger wider and narrower people. As a wide fellow, a 4h flight next to another wife person is quite uncomfortable, especially when the cart comes through. Or maybe stagger the seats a bit. Or anything really.

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

Weird Al is an example of how someone can be funny without being cynical, without punching down. He has fun being funny. He told us GenX brats that it's okay to enjoy things. The cultural impact of that is lost to time I think. But the cynicism of the 89s/90s was pervasive. Joy was revolutionary.

I was second in line at a store the clerk was stressing, the woman in front of me just wanted to leave, the receipt printer wasn't working. I said "I'm a computer tech, I know the trick." Yelled "DEMONS OUT!" and slapped it. Immediately started working. Inspired by The Far Side, naturally.
