One the darkest panels... I to this day think of it at least once

Calvin and Hobbes strip:
Ι DONT WΑΝΤ TΟ CATCΗ ΠΗΕ BUS. I DONT WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL. I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE AT ALL.

I'M SICK OF EVERYONE TELLING ME WHAT TO DO ALL THE TIME! I HATE MY LIFE! I HATE EVERYTHING! I WISH I WAS DEAD!

WELL, NO,I DON'T. NOT REALLY.

I WISH EVERYONE ELSE WAS DEAD.

They’re making an elevated horror movie where a woman with a pretty face makes an un pretty face. She does like a beautiful model face but then screams or laughs or something and it will shake you to your fucking core, that a face can do that, in a movie at least

lmao, I genuinely have been thinking a lot about genre and identity confined in and expressed in it (to sum up too broadly) a lot more because of your work though, it’s been stewing since All Units really. Also great rec! Looks like it intersects with exactly the stuff I’ve been ruminating on

lol I don’t know, I think some of these are scanned in and if the pages/covers are marked up or wrinkled it throws off the scan somehow. Have seen some unbearably bad scans where you’re trying to figure out what the words are supposed to be because the words scanned in make no sense haha

Giovanni’s room, where the denial of identity leads to destruction. Baldwin is never naively optimistic, he’s more critical of symbolic ‘progress’ than anyone, but he’s incredibly hopeful in his pursuit and embrace of honesty
030
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Le Carres characters are usually destroyed by their pursuit of a “true” identity (and women in his novels primarily function as an impetus for this journey of self discovery, nothing more). Compare with go tell it on the mountain where finding your identity and embracing it is salvation
140
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Anyways, incredible to have all that in mind and discover Baldwin already summed it all up in a dozen paragraphs inside an essay about identity manufactured via films lol

j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Le carre can’t quite bring himself to that level of critique I think, still loves the idea of ‘Europe’ despite what it’s built on. He hates America bc it’s a nightmare, but it’s Europe that dreamed it

humanity forever, trapped inside the role of brutal oppressor, in the name of civilization.
130
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Baldwin wields words like a weapon, constantly slicing thru the false front of “America” and the ‘freedom’ it offers, accessible only to those capable of aiding America in its ever growing exploitation. And the people who do take this offer are never really free themselves, cut off from the rest of

j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Baldwin finds socialist orgs lacking in an ability to deliver liberation to black Americans, sees the construction of white identity built on the foundation of the subjugation of the people it calls black and the recreation of this dichotomy recreated in liberal and socialist orgs
140
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Contrast with Baldwin who knows his country hates him and is determined to find out why, who escapes to France and then writes about America from a distance. He’s not offered the same escape route as le carre, he can’t wrap himself in the flag, not without a tremendous amount of self deception
130
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
He makes one more escape at the end of his life, becoming a citizen of Ireland. Mostly bc of brexit. he can only justify England as part of “Europe” I think, a key upholder of western civilization. He’s very upset by UK’s exit from the EU
130
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
He’s clearly very ambivalent about “England”, it seemed to offer an identity, it trains its young men in private schools to be ready made stewards of the empire, an empire built on exploitation and destruction and burning thru people with shattered identities. He loves England, he hates England.
120
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And he’s always writing characters who realize too late they’ve been searching their whole lives for a real identity, been offered one a loyal servant of the empire, and are now trapped in a career of constantly shifting identities, constantly lying as a job
130
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
His books almost always feature double-agents who are unsure of their own loyalties, lost between 100 different identities that they pick up and drop at a moments notice. In his books ppl usually learn these skills as young ppl, trying to fit in and are recruited bc MI6 (the circus) find them useful
130
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Anyways, then he writes looking glass war, an almost satirical portrait of the espionage business, that features Smiley again. Then tinker tailor soldier spy which makes him famous.
120
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Allegedly bc Kim Philby, a Soviet double agent, blew his cover. But le carres stories about his life in the service (and out of it)constantly shift, that may not be the whole story
120
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
He starts writing novels under the name John le Carre while stationed in Bonn, first a murder mystery featuring george smiley a retired spy, then a murder mystery that becomes an espionage story and finally spy who came in from the cold which is well received. Then a year later leaves the service
120
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
He’s moved into the intelligence corps , right as the Cold War is really kicking off, does his time, goes back to college and reports on leftists groups there for MI5. Here’s a way to feel like he fits in- earning an identity by serving the country
120
j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
So he basically abandons school I think right before college and runs to Germany and goes to the university of Bern and talks his way in. He learns German and loves German classic lit. Speaking German makes him useful to the British Army when he’s called up into the national service

j @jaynonamebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Le Carrè’s dad conned people by pretending to be wealthier and more influential than he was and taught John (real name David cornwell) to do the same at the private schools he was sending him to (and usually always behind on the bills for) so John always felt he was pretending to be someone else
