In the 1985 Doctor Who serial Vengeance on Varos, an authoritarian regime run by a weak man keeps the downtrodden population in line by broadcasting public executions to distract from the fact that it has tanked the economy through a combination of incompetence, arrogance and institutional cruelty.

As an academic, it feels like some colleagues have lost the ability to engage deeply: they don't want to read an article unless it directly answers a question they already have... basically like using a chatbot they only want an answer to a current issue & not to actually learn anything or explore.

I once had someone tell me, and I do mean this literally, that LLMs transcend the limits of turing machines and computability because they are not constrained by having to give correct answers

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

It’s not better for the generations after us, who are watching every one of their career ambitions disappear in real time before they even get to start them There are students right now on their third or fourth change of major, as the funding keeps getting cut and the rugs keep getting pulled

Using AI is almost certainly harmful to us cognitively, emotionally, creatively, and socially. We should not use it. We should not normalize it.

We are basically like this in research already. Postdocs and PhD students growing plants, doing tissue culture, and pipetting, while AI chat bots doing the analyses, writing proposals and papers. Humans having to do the menial tasks, while AI chat bots took over the creative work.

can we PLEASE bring back the word "poser" and stop using "larp" or "cosplay" - being a "poser" or "faking" being into something is lazy and disingenuous whereas cosplayers and actual larpers are passionate about their hobbies and out a lot of time and effort into them

"AI may make your job easier, but that effort has just been shifted onto your users. They are noticing it and they hate it." I've said this before: if you bracket self-delusion, generative "AI" doesn't save labour, it displaces it onto the people who have to deal with the slop.

We set up a surveillance panopticon 45 days after the attacks that has come to define our hellish reality and explicitly degraded our constitutional rights. Congress passed a law giving up their right to declare war. Our government's immediate response was to restrict the rights of Americans.

You know, when you find out that the art you like is made by people you've learned hold views you find wholly repugnant, I don't think you need to disavow ever having enjoyed the art. It's okay to acknowledge you liked or loved that art, but are now putting it aside. That was then, this is now.

My sister in law found a book by the Irish patron saint of the arts, Don Conroy, and he unironically did the meme.
Cover of the book, "Wildlife Fun with Don Conroy." On it, we see a photo of the artist, surrounded by drawings of plants and a foxInterior, showing tutorials on how to draw a deer and a hedgehog. You know the ancient meme, "draw the rest of the fucking owl?" Basically, that.

A fundamental problem with "oh it's useful for coding" is that "generating more software faster" has, if anything, negative marginal utility in itself. The world is not suffering from a software shortage. The world is suffering from a software quality crisis, which LLMs seem more likely to worsen.

If you design an autonomous killing machine, we should hold the creator responsible, not the machine. If you design a plagiarism machine, we should apply the same principle. If you propose a hypothetical novel art machine, we should ask serious questions about how it *actually* work.

Again, not what I am saying, so I will try again: We should reject assigning responsibility to artificial or automated processes, any kind, whether it is for management or for self-expression, because “responsibility” is meaningful & impactful.

Too much art, we starve. Too little, we go crazy. (Easter Island, The Shining) Entirely hypothetical artificial life has different energy/sustenance needs, different “novel stimulus” needs, requires a different balance, threatening to destabilize the (flawed, sometimes horribly) balance we have.

For me, I kinda boil it down like this: whatever humans are doing, our brain meat needs resources to keep doing it, but also novelty - basic sustenance is tedious & inefficient - so we have social/political/economic/ideological systems to navigate a balance between sustenance & frivolous efforts.

Humans have been debating cognition and consciousness, free-will and determinism et al for thousands of years at this point, the character limits do not suffice. But, like, reading a lot of that is how I can be (somewhat?) confident?

When an office manager orders a box of printer paper, who is affected? When my neighbor’s kid practices their violin, or when Improv Everywhere stages a flash mob, or when I get choked up at the end of Iron Giant, art is decisions affecting unrelated people. Serious question: How could it not be?

Music (even jazz) is balancing and timing. Even painting is prep-work, priming, under-shading, color-theory. Maybe there are other arts I don’t have first-hand experience with, but my experience of “art-like activity” has been much closer to “management decision“ than anything else.

I’m not any kind of “high art” artist, but I’ve done a little theater, written a short story or three, done a little painting (mostly Warhammer, which is more kitsch than art), was in a jazz band at uni. Writing is mostly revising. Theater is blocking, sets, costumes, lighting and music cues.

More to the point, I am saying the copyright system has very little to do with artistic self-expression, it is deeply flawed, on multiple axes, yet it’s what we have for now, and the current models are a gross violation of it, and the “hypothetically, what if“ thought experiment does not help us.

Joshua @jaw6.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
It’s a variation on “the computer can’t be held responsible, so we can’t allow it to make decisions” thing. If it can’t be responsible for decisions, then it can’t be responsible for artistic expression, right? Humans can bear responsibility, so they bear responsibility.

What we label as “art” and “not art” is wildly complicated, and I am not any kind of expert, but I am *not* saying “Threepio’s labor is coerced and therefore theirs is not true artistic self-expression”. I am saying their brain + labor is automated & artificial, and we should be skeptical of it.

I am very much not an expert on renaissance Italy, but I’m having trouble applying “forced labour” to that era. Also, I’m pretty confident that our modern sense of art as individual expression would be pretty out of band for them.

A sufficiently independent intelligence should hypothetically have the right to expression, yes. But, as an abstract exercise, we cannot say whether it has the right to profit from that expression, or to steal profits from others, let alone societal/cultural value from the rest of us. But I vote no.

I think a better question might be something like “if copyright concerns reproduction of intellectual property, striking some kind of balance between creators’ profits and cultural value, how can ingesting mass volumes into autocomplete machines *not* be a gross violation of that balancing act?”
