It is maximally profitable right now to either sell panic *about* trans people, or sell panic *to* trans people. Both impulses feed the media consumer's desire to feel mastery over events. One is simple bigoted conspiracism, the other is a defensive crouch that offers a false sense of security.
Emily: I think about this as a journalist and a novelist: I cannot control how the reader takes what I write. Especially when reporting, I try to be as careful as I can, but somebody might read what I write and conclude, Well, we're all going to die. And there's such an incentive structure to walk right up to the edge of catastrophe or even stick a toe over the line, and even publications I think are terrific will get as close to that line as they can because they know that drives subscription dollars and clicks. That's not just true of trans media; it's true of the media writ large. How do you think about that incentive structure, especially as it relates to social media?

Me: There's two ways to generate clicks about trans issues. One is to sell panic about trans people; the other is to sell panic to trans people. The social media incentive structure there, as it is with so many issues, is the septic, perverted version of that old classic about local TV news: If it bleeds, it leads.

Selling people that sense of control is, as I noted, the same thing at the root of a lot of conspiracism: not to trust mainstream sources who tell you things aren't quite so bad or things could get better or don't panic. It's the cinematic logic of a disaster movie where the people who are saying, "Actually, you should panic!" are correct. Think about everything from the narrative structure of Independence Day or Mass Effect. The catastrophizer is actually correct against all the people saying, "I'll calm down. It won't be so bad." That story structure is very, very popular, and it gets you invested in the protagonist with a pleasing sense of dramatic irony for the audience. They know something many of the other characters don't or refuse to accept.

We are all reared on some version of this story, and it seeps into everyday life. There's an excellent piece from CBS News in 1967 by Eric Sevareid reporting on the findings of the Warren Commission [whi

There's an overlap of people who know AI well enough and also know the doomerism is bullshit. It's the same crowd that rejected AI because it adds nothing to anything. There is no invention brought about by AI that hasn't been done by some other tool that already existed.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

Section 2 creates exceptions of what is not covered by section 1. Since the text is not identifying a speaker and no audio archive is kept making identification by electronic means impossible, this might qualify as an anonymous recording. It would need a court to determine if it is.

Cursory read of 9.73.030 (2) (c) would likely grant exception for the Apple Watch since the recordings do not attempt to identify a speaker. Since it’s anonymous I believe this would grant an exception. app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default....

Software has been licensed for as long as I can remember, even back when you got games on 5 1/4 floppy discs. So this is nothing new, except now there’s no physical medium you’re buying. Sony’s lawyer is right, so this is something that needs to be fixed by updating laws on digital good ownership.

I left Twitter in 2023, when I realized that Elon's changes had made the site useless for me. I had a half million followers, but his new algorithm drove my engagement numbers down to nothing. I wasn't actually reaching anyone. I was just providing cover for Nazis. So I left. You can too. Honest!
I haven’t been blind to the steady enshittification of Elon’s Twitter, but I’ve been telling myself that I still had a big platform — just under a half million followers — and the growing strength of misinformation on the platform meant I had a duty to stay and push back against it.
Except, as I slowly realized, I don’t have a big platform anymore. Engagement on all my posts is down dramatically under the new system, and a post that would’ve racked up a thousand RTs immediately is now lingering for days with a dozen or so.
I think my fellow (former) big accounts there need to realize that we’re experiencing a bit of a phantom limb syndrome. We still have a big number of followers, but they’re not actually seeing what we post and we’re not remotely having the impact that we once did (or at least thought we did).
Again, all we’re doing is giving our personal seal of approval and a sense of legitimacy to a place that’s rapidly becoming an alt-right hangout of grifters and grievance artists.

Great movie until Spielberg cut the final line from the script. The final line written was a title card reading: The next year saw 163 murders in the District of Columbia. That line validates the whole script and forces a conversation. Disclosure Day doesn’t drop that ball.
