The Censorship-Industrial Complex theory is an embarrassing misreading of complex dynamics, and (ironically) it's quickly become a tool to shut down legitimate discourse and criticism by framing it as a conspiracy against free speech.

I really hate to admit it but yeah, it isn’t a conspiracy. For a lot of reasons there aren’t enough Americans willing to buy small cars. (And it’s not just Chevy or EVs, beyond a few staple sedans, few makes have found traction with new small models) I don’t know how you change that.

So when a neutrino is just flying through space unimpeded it has a mass but it is “oscillating” among the different flavors and it doesn’t have a defined flavor until it interacts with something in a way that gives the flavor away. Neutrinos are slippery little things!

A fun fact about neutrinos is that they come in three “flavors” (types) and also in three masses and you would think that this means each flavor has its own mass and you would be absolutely wrong about that.

Screenshot of a tweet from @SeanParnellASW dated 5 Oct 2026, reading as follows:

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the attack.

The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution. Judgement day for Hasan has finally come.

For sure, but is that because those things are inherently related in that kind of way? Or is any dependency there just an accident of the way our brains are shaped? With sufficiently advanced neuroscience could we separate them? I think that’s a really interesting question.

J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Or like if you had a scifi technology that allowed you to turn on or off individual groups of neurons in a human brain, how much could you turn off while remaining conscious? Could you get to a state where you’re not conscious but still capable of speech and logical reasoning?

J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I wonder if it would be possible for an alien species to develop advanced technology and space travel on pure instinct. Just massively parallel basic neural structures. And if we ever met a species like that what would it be like?
110
J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
For example I think often about the remarkable specificity of the sequelae of specific brain injuries, like certain aphasias. It makes me think “consciousness” may be an extremely modular kind of thing. Ie, maybe it does make sense an organism could develop complex speech without being “conscious”
110
J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I agree on that. But which I call him incurious (which I also agree is maybe unfair) I mean that I don’t think he’s adequately considering a lot of additional approaches to these questions that a robust understanding of the messiness and complexities of biology would contribute
110
J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think also re eco psych: I don’t think it’s controversial to believe evolution likely shaped human consciousness per se. The problem with that is you can’t test or prove any of the specific scenarios you imagine so that field became a refuge of folks mostly who want to justify stereotypes.
100
J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
And maybe wanted to build on an ethical framework that starts from principals similar to human treatment of animals. But you’ve got to convince me we’ve reached that level before you start talking to me about something as complex and nuanced as consciousness or moral judgement.
200
J. Emory Parker 🏳️‍🌈 @jaspar.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
And I think it’s salient that in out of billions of years, we have one uncontroversial extant example of it. So it seems rare! I’d be more interested if someone was trying to convince me a we might be able to build a neural network complex enough to experience pain signals at like an arthropod level
