I do not want ICE. I want universally accessible paths to citizenship. I don't want more police. I'd rather reallocate funding to preventing crime from happening by giving people Enough. I don't want the death penalty. Two wrongs still don't make a right. I hate this timeline.

One of the reasons I despise AI is how it robs imagination twice. First it steals from creatives and thinkers to make slop. Then it lets users bypass rather than learn a creative process. The political timing isn’t accidental. We need imagination to envision a better world that we’ll fight for.

It’s not that I think people who commit heinous crimes don’t deserve to die. But I’ll never support the death penalty as long as our justice system is unjust. An unjust system should never have the power to make irreversible decisions, especially when Black people disproportionately pay the price.

Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between union membership and deaths of despair. Using state-level variation in the timing of the adoption of right-to-work laws as a natural experiment, I show that right-to-work laws are associated with a decline in union membership and an increase in deaths of despair. Two-way fixed-effects (TWFE) difference-in-differences (DiD) estimates suggest that the adoption of a right-to-work law is associated with a 2.6 percentage point reduction in union membership and an increase in deaths of despair mortality of 13 additional persons per 100,000, implying there are approximately 7.5 additional deaths of despair for every 1,000 workers who lose union membership. An analysis of mechanisms suggests the increase in mortality is largely driven by increased opioid usage and a concomitant increase in overdose deaths. I support the TWFE results with estimates from two alternative estimators robust to concerns about treatment effect heterogeneity and variation in treatment timing. Estimates from the Callaway and Sant’Anna (2021) estimator and the Borusyak et al. (2024) estimator support the TWFE findings: right-to-work laws reduce union membership and increase deaths of despair.

There’s a problem with people saying politicians have to abandon certain groups in order to win (aside from it being wrong). If they do win, they generally don’t become massive advocates for the people they abandoned. If they can’t stand on principles to win, they won’t govern on those principles

If you use the term 'during covid', it's like saying 'during measles' or 'during flu'. It isn't an era with an end point. The time of covid is ongoing. If you mean 'during the time people bothered to try reduce the spread' , or 'in the first two years of the outbreak', then say so.

defunding the police is good, actually, and we should still pursue it as a policy goal. i'd go further and argue that we need to redesign community safety from the ground up because policing is always going to be a means by which violent, power-hungry abusers will seek out victims with impunity.
