Once again reminding people who run companies that they have autonomy, and that there is freedom (and money!) in trying to appeal to actual humans and not the machine pretending to be billions of them.
To me, you will always be the guy who understood the internet the best because you saw its worst parts, and still held out hope for something better. How do you think the internet has evolved, and how do you think about covering it through The Onion now versus when you left NBC?

It’s reverting, at least for young people, to something closer to what was exciting about the internet 10 to 15 years ago—a means to an end to meet people in real life. That’s how I moved to New York, met my friends, discovered music and movies I never would have found. It destabilized culture in a way that let me exist functionally for the first time. Then people got the wrong idea—that being on the computer all day was the point. It never was. The internet helped me understand a world that had seemed vacuous and weird.

Now we’re back in a place where the people who consolidated the internet seem to think the goal is to keep us on the computer feeding the machine. I don’t think that’s what people want. For us it’s the opposite: How do we get you back into real life using the information? The Onion, at the end of the day, is a really good sentence generator for the real world—the distillation you can say in the elevator. We want people out in the world talking to each other again—which is part of why we have almost 83,000 people getting a physical newspaper in their mailbox again this month. We view the internet as a means to an end to get people into The Onion in real life. Dominating ChatGPT is not the goal.

There will never be anything like this again, though. Three players, on the same team, for more than two decades. They’re the first to ever accomplish that in the history of North American professional sports. They’ll be the last.

For every Connor McDavid who stays in Edmonton or Alex Ovechkin who stays in Washington, there are countless great players who move on, who want more money, fewer taxes, more power.

Crosby, Malkin and Letang just want to play here.

Finished Gracie Gold’s memoir and it’s insane how much it reminded me of Mary Cain’s. Despite different sports feds, family dynamics, finances, etc at play, so many of the same forces push both to contemplate suicide. Almost like they’re describing systemic problems in U.S. sport…

Class in the US is entirely a matter of aesthetics now. Rich suburban kids are “country”. Beard Dudes who look like they love IPAs are “working class.” Teachers who make $32,000 a year but have to dress up sort of nice in JCPenney clothes are “elites“. None of these words mean anything anymore.

Speculation ramped up this week over which ranking administration chief will go next after Pentagon head Pete Hegseth ousted his Navy secretary - with President Donald Trump's blessing. Now, a top White House official tells Dasha that Patel is likely the next Cabinet-level official to go.
"It's only a matter of time," the official, who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, said of the FBI director.
There are several reasons, the official said, but top among them is the number of negative stories centered on the FBI director is "not a good look for a Cabinet secretary," and Trump is fed up with the level of distraction.
