Was going through this Washpo article from 1990 for a fact check. Had no idea shark week went back that far?? www.washingtonpost.com/archive/life...
This Week on The Discovery Channel comes "Shark Week '90," a big ratings success last year. The package includes a world-, a cable- and two U.S. television premieres. The shows, with encores in parentheses, are: "Jaws -- The True Story," Sunday at 10 p.m. (Tuesday at midnight and Saturday at 7 p.m.); World TV premiere of "The World of Sharks and Barracuda," Sunday at midnight (Friday at 10 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.); "Sharks -- Hunters of the Sea," Monday at 10 p.m. (Wednesday at midnight and Saturday at 6 p.m.); "Sharkhunters/Sharks -- Predators or Prey?," Monday at midnight (Saturday at 10 p.m. and next Sunday at 5 p.m.); "Shark!," Tuesday at 10 p.m. (Thursday at midnight and Saturday at 5 p.m.) "Operation Shark Attack!," Wednesday at 10 p.m. (Friday at midnight and next Sunday at 7 p.m.) and "The Great Whites of Dangerous Reef," Thursday at 10 p.m. (Saturday at midnight and next Sunday at 6 p.m.) TDC is also showing "In Search of the Great White Shark" on its "Challenge" series Monday at 8 p.m. (Saturday at 1 and 11 p.m.). That's a total of 24 hours of sharking for the week, seven of them on Saturday.

Inject it in my veins www.nytimes.com/athletic/742...
There will never be anything like this again, though. Three players, on the same team, for more than two decades. They’re the first to ever accomplish that in the history of North American professional sports. They’ll be the last.

For every Connor McDavid who stays in Edmonton or Alex Ovechkin who stays in Washington, there are countless great players who move on, who want more money, fewer taxes, more power.

Crosby, Malkin and Letang just want to play here.

Sometimes my phone decides to offload Substack to save space and I never realize this until my train is late, and then I come back to many good pieces, including this by Catherine Lacey on our dumb delusions open.substack.com/pub/catherin...
I remember when someone explained to me—I don’t know, several years ago now—that the word delusional now had a cute nickname: delulu. That’s when I knew they must have built a new fast track to hell. If being unable to comprehend reality gets a cute re-branding, you can be sure the fascists are winning.

Still at the restaurant (suicide store). 2025-26 Penguins thank you for the damn fun ride www.nhl.com/penguins/new...
“You ask me how cool is it you all play together. For me, it’s natural. I play with Sid forever, and I’m like oh, I see you tomorrow. I’m not thinking (any) other way. People ask oh, 20 years... for me, it’s like, 20 years, it’s quick, first of all. Time just flies. But for me, we’re always together.”

Crosby has described the dynamic between them as ‘family.’ Letang said they’re all different, that he is quiet and intense, Malkin is loud and funny, and Crosby is the one who drives the ship. So, how would Malkin put it?

“First of all, they like me so much,” Malkin said. “I’m like middle guy. I’m always between them. Because you know Sid mad, Tanger mad, I come and talk to them [laughs]. No, we are like family. We know we're good friends. But you can’t be nice every time. Sometimes you’re feeling you angry, you’re not happy, you show emotion, but it's fine, it's good. But next day we're like, sitting and talk, ‘okay, we do this, this. We do it wrong. Okay, let's go back and play it better.’ Show emotion, I think it's good. I like to show emotion.”

“Shows you care,” I said.

Kash Patel on Dylan Larkin's IG liveFIRST IN PLAYBOOK: Things aren't looking great for FBI Director Kash Patel.
Speculation ramped up this week over which ranking administration chief will go next after Pentagon head Pete Hegseth ousted his Navy secretary - with President Donald Trump's blessing. Now, a top White House official tells Dasha that Patel is likely the next Cabinet-level official to go.
"It's only a matter of time," the official, who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, said of the FBI director.
There are several reasons, the official said, but top among them is the number of negative stories centered on the FBI director is "not a good look for a Cabinet secretary," and Trump is fed up with the level of distraction.

My favorite answer in this genre came from the wonderful Pedro Lasch because it's undeniably true www.zocalopublicsquare.org/artist-pedro...
The other thing that gives me hope, but it’s not a very comforting hope, is that history is full of examples of the unpredictable. When the Soviet Union collapsed, nobody saw it coming. I was there for the immigrant rallies in 2006 which, again, nobody saw them coming; they were unprecedented. That’s my hope, that something really unexpected, that none of us will see coming, will happen. But of course I don’t know what it is.

I do a ton of these silly lil interviews. They're quick hits that follow a very specific formula. Lately I've been taking them as an excuse to ask smart people what's making them hopeful. This was a good one from Michael Woo, who I could talk to all day www.zocalopublicsquare.org/1871-memoria...
I’m coming away from both the house-emptying experience and the passing of my sister thinking that life is long, and there is a lot you can do during your life. If you’re facing frustrations or limitations, think about how maybe good things can still come out of life, even when you’re dealing with sadness or frustration.

Related, just read the latest Miranda July newsletter mirandajuly.substack.com/p/existentia...
For the last couple months I’ve been tunneling around underground doing research on patheticness. There is a fear of being pathetic (not creatively, but in relationships) that has grown large in the shadows; I fear it runs the show. (I just described this to a friend and she did not see it at all, “I see you as having a lot of confidence and humor in relationships and your partners sometimes being pathetic,” she said. Love that, but this patheticness is just very private, secret, and 98 percent internal.) In any case, I’ve come at it every which way1 and it’s been an interesting and painful inquiry.

To curse the timeline
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - This is how Rahm Emanuel eats a salad:
He rips open its clear, clamshell container with two hands. He grabs the ramekin of the dressing. He pours it across the salad. Then he
picks up the salad container, shaking it with an intensity and ferocity that forces the balsamic throughout, giving no quarter to the greens and the grilled chicken.
This is material information, mind you, for his would-be 2028 Democratic presidential primary rivals. Because how Rahm eats a salad is how he does anything and everything: with intent and with verve and without mercy.

There are a few oddballs in here, but most of this list is very much "the year was 2023"

-The Grief Cure
-Esther Perel episode on grief
-All There Is With Anderson Cooper podcast in general
-I think it's this episode of This Jungian Life (I'm just a huge fan of this pod in general, and they address grief a lot on it)
-Stay True
-Our Wives Under the Sea
-Whalefall
-Man's Search for Meaning
-Pure Colour
-Small Rain
-Intermezzo
-LOL OK this may have just been a me/timing thing, but the plot about the dog in The Pisces really hit but I don't think most people would lead with loss as this book's major theme so YMMV
-This is another one that I'd asterisk. So I think sometimes with loss there's this piece of anger that you carry so Molly by Blake Butler spoke to that for me but flagging because it's dark
-And hear me out, Vampire Diaries. I was just looking for a show with a lot of seasons but realized at some point it is all about loss, and then read a piece that confirmed it was very intentionally about that
