Because of the scarcity of tickets available for people to go inside NMAAHC, folks pilgrimaged across the US and the world even, to get to the National Mall that steamy September day a decade ago, just so they could be part of that moment.

It was an honor of a lifetime to be a reporter at Smithsonian magazine when the National Museum of African American History and Culture opened under Lonnie Bunch's stewardship. I spent the day conducting oral history interviews with the astounding number of people who showed up to witness that day.

Once again reminding people who run companies that they have autonomy, and that there is freedom (and money!) in trying to appeal to actual humans and not the machine pretending to be billions of them.
To me, you will always be the guy who understood the internet the best because you saw its worst parts, and still held out hope for something better. How do you think the internet has evolved, and how do you think about covering it through The Onion now versus when you left NBC?

It’s reverting, at least for young people, to something closer to what was exciting about the internet 10 to 15 years ago—a means to an end to meet people in real life. That’s how I moved to New York, met my friends, discovered music and movies I never would have found. It destabilized culture in a way that let me exist functionally for the first time. Then people got the wrong idea—that being on the computer all day was the point. It never was. The internet helped me understand a world that had seemed vacuous and weird.

Now we’re back in a place where the people who consolidated the internet seem to think the goal is to keep us on the computer feeding the machine. I don’t think that’s what people want. For us it’s the opposite: How do we get you back into real life using the information? The Onion, at the end of the day, is a really good sentence generator for the real world—the distillation you can say in the elevator. We want people out in the world talking to each other again—which is part of why we have almost 83,000 people getting a physical newspaper in their mailbox again this month. We view the internet as a means to an end to get people into The Onion in real life. Dominating ChatGPT is not the goal.

Was going through this Washpo article from 1990 for a fact check. Had no idea shark week went back that far?? www.washingtonpost.com/archive/life...
This Week on The Discovery Channel comes "Shark Week '90," a big ratings success last year. The package includes a world-, a cable- and two U.S. television premieres. The shows, with encores in parentheses, are: "Jaws -- The True Story," Sunday at 10 p.m. (Tuesday at midnight and Saturday at 7 p.m.); World TV premiere of "The World of Sharks and Barracuda," Sunday at midnight (Friday at 10 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.); "Sharks -- Hunters of the Sea," Monday at 10 p.m. (Wednesday at midnight and Saturday at 6 p.m.); "Sharkhunters/Sharks -- Predators or Prey?," Monday at midnight (Saturday at 10 p.m. and next Sunday at 5 p.m.); "Shark!," Tuesday at 10 p.m. (Thursday at midnight and Saturday at 5 p.m.) "Operation Shark Attack!," Wednesday at 10 p.m. (Friday at midnight and next Sunday at 7 p.m.) and "The Great Whites of Dangerous Reef," Thursday at 10 p.m. (Saturday at midnight and next Sunday at 6 p.m.) TDC is also showing "In Search of the Great White Shark" on its "Challenge" series Monday at 8 p.m. (Saturday at 1 and 11 p.m.). There will never be anything like this again, though. Three players, on the same team, for more than two decades. They’re the first to ever accomplish that in the history of North American professional sports. They’ll be the last.

For every Connor McDavid who stays in Edmonton or Alex Ovechkin who stays in Washington, there are countless great players who move on, who want more money, fewer taxes, more power.

Crosby, Malkin and Letang just want to play here.

Finished Gracie Gold’s memoir and it’s insane how much it reminded me of Mary Cain’s. Despite different sports feds, family dynamics, finances, etc at play, so many of the same forces push both to contemplate suicide. Almost like they’re describing systemic problems in U.S. sport…

Class in the US is entirely a matter of aesthetics now. Rich suburban kids are “country”. Beard Dudes who look like they love IPAs are “working class.” Teachers who make $32,000 a year but have to dress up sort of nice in JCPenney clothes are “elites“. None of these words mean anything anymore.

Still at the restaurant (suicide store). 2025-26 Penguins thank you for the damn fun ride www.nhl.com/penguins/new...
“You ask me how cool is it you all play together. For me, it’s natural. I play with Sid forever, and I’m like oh, I see you tomorrow. I’m not thinking (any) other way. People ask oh, 20 years... for me, it’s like, 20 years, it’s quick, first of all. Time just flies. But for me, we’re always together.”

Crosby has described the dynamic between them as ‘family.’ Letang said they’re all different, that he is quiet and intense, Malkin is loud and funny, and Crosby is the one who drives the ship. So, how would Malkin put it?

“First of all, they like me so much,” Malkin said. “I’m like middle guy. I’m always between them. Because you know Sid mad, Tanger mad, I come and talk to them [laughs]. No, we are like family. We know we're good friends. But you can’t be nice every time. Sometimes you’re feeling you angry, you’re not happy, you show emotion, but it's fine, it's good. But next day we're like, sitting and talk, ‘okay, we do this, this. We do it wrong. Okay, let's go back and play it better.’ Show emotion, I think it's good. I like to show emotion.”

“Shows you care,” I said.
