“When revolutions reach a tipping point, the choice is not between moderation and radical revolution,” Rees observes, “but between radical reaction and radical revolution, between counter-revolution and revolution.” There is no moderate path towards a radical ideal and half-measures can be co-opted.

Finished John Rees’ *Fiery Spirits: Popular Protest, Parliament and the English Revolution* this morning over coffee, pancakes, and Norman Blake’s *Whiskey Before Breakfast* playing in the background. Fantastic read on a historical topic of which I had only passive knowledge.

Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQ

Crisis management, in modern American society, has become a religion unto itself. Becoming John the Baptist is not enough; you also have to be Jesus as well.

Discussion of AI ‘alignment/misalignment’ takes on heightened importance in conjunction with Rancière’s notion of ‘consensus.’ That the term has heightened importance points not only to its obvious political meaning, but also its implication for what it means to use a product ‘in alignment.’

This feels more relevant than ever with terms like alignment, agentic, hallucinations, and more are increasingly used (with intention!) by proponents of AI. Words matter and the meaning of words is a battleground in the ongoing class war.

There is a subtle shift here as using AI that is ‘aligned’ means the focus is on output of the AI and not the user using AI for a task. The invocation implies a de-valuing of the user at a fundamental level as input becomes severed from output in both political and subjective spheres of activity.

Listening to this album, stoned in the back of a Toyota 4Runner that had its seats removed and a mattress put in their place, I truly could not conceive of how Shadow made the sounds coming out of the speakers. I immediately had to grab a copy and it changed the way I felt about music.

Sometimes you buy a record from the discount bin you’ve never heard of and it’s…well…not great. Then sometimes you buy something like ‘Perugia’ by Roland Hanna and you feel sublime joy that fate guided your hand to a record you know will be enjoyed for years to come.

ps if anyone feels like reading or just tucking away somewhere will link below the article in question, which mashes up nabokov with super mario bros along the way to something rather larger than i knew how to deal with just then was several personal frameworks ago, but this still feels right:
Additionally, the novel can be glitched: exploited by a reader looking for places in the text where the walls of utterance may be breached. This is to read along with John Shade, who develops out of a typographical error a hermeneutics targeting “not text, but texture; not the dream / But topsy-turvical coincidence, / Not flimsy nonsense, but a web of sense” (Nabokov1989, 63). The greatest revelations may come not from any personal vision or sage counsel, but through errors: a typo here, a misreading there leading to wild flights of imaginative and critical play. There may be guardrails to interpretation, but that does not preclude the possibility of plunging head-long through them, and plummeting to the earth below. Pal e Fire not only dramatizes this sort of fatal misinterpretation, but also shows how readers continue on afterwards, how they fly on in the reflected sky.

I love the term "folk forensics"—and indeed, many cloying tells of AI use—like lists of threes, words deemed statistically likely to be LLM output, and em dashes—are mere superficialities. Not only that, they distract us from the underlying logic of textual production in the 21st century.

Mimetic contagion as the source of moral panic is nothing new in media (D&D satanic panic, violent video games, etc.) but the atomization afforded by AI provides a well for this panic that is unfathomably deep.
