You arrive at the idea that AI will ‘personalize’ things to your taste by believing AI has neutral values, which it absolutely does not. Beyond the fact that this is a facile fantasy, it demonstrates both a severe lack of imagination and a callous disregard for creativity endemic to tech bros.

Yeah because you have to seriously address everything filed, draft and file objections too, even if the request is non-sensical or has no basis in law. It’s unbelievable how much wasted effort goes into dealing with something that took them 5 minutes to cook up.

I work in Family Law and we have a case where the opposing party is self-represented and files AI-slop pleadings every other day. We’re talking 30-page Motions for pleadings that usually take 3 pages at most. I’ve seen three such Motions this week alone! Chat, the Judicial system is cooked.

[Chekhov thought] “Disgust remains a servile passion, breeding resentment more often than revolt. It is not resentful men who change life. It is those who have begun to feel, in a more just and harmonious tone, the failings of their own existence.” - Rancière, *Distant Freedom* (91)

“When revolutions reach a tipping point, the choice is not between moderation and radical revolution,” Rees observes, “but between radical reaction and radical revolution, between counter-revolution and revolution.” There is no moderate path towards a radical ideal and half-measures can be co-opted.

Political history like this is vital because, Rees argues, “most historical events are laminates of long-term, medium-term and intermediate causes, and…if we understand the interaction of these layers of causation…we can make an accurate assessment of why any given moment unfolded as it did.”

Radicals eventually purged moderates from parliament to realize their goals yet “the final acts of the trial and execution of the king had stretched the alliance of radical forces to the breaking point.” The coalition “shattered at the point where the destruction of the old state became necessary.”

“The knot that the moderates could never untie,” Rees concludes, “was contained in the fact that that they could not accept that the radical political action of which they disapproved was necessary to achieve the political end that they desired.” Moderate compromises fed reactionary potentials.

One theme of the book is how radical members of the Long Parliament needed moderate support at the beginning of their project to deconstruct structures and supports of absolutism, but when gains were realized towards these ends the ultimate goal—removal of the king—proved unpalatable to moderates.

This was a fascinating history not just because the terms of the English Revolution are important to understand on their own merits, but also because the story of curtailing Charles’ power, and then his head, is illustrative of the challenges faced by any radical ideal requiring coalition politics.

Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQ

A fantastic read! A fav scene (forget the details) described men chasing someone out a high window, them hanging on the window’s edge, and being beaten “until their hands relaxed” and they fall. Evocative prose to be sure. I’m planning a session this weekend to get Cuius Regio on the table as well.

Discussion of AI ‘alignment/misalignment’ takes on heightened importance in conjunction with Rancière’s notion of ‘consensus.’ That the term has heightened importance points not only to its obvious political meaning, but also its implication for what it means to use a product ‘in alignment.’

This feels more relevant than ever with terms like alignment, agentic, hallucinations, and more are increasingly used (with intention!) by proponents of AI. Words matter and the meaning of words is a battleground in the ongoing class war.

There is a subtle shift here as using AI that is ‘aligned’ means the focus is on output of the AI and not the user using AI for a task. The invocation implies a de-valuing of the user at a fundamental level as input becomes severed from output in both political and subjective spheres of activity.

Or, to put it another way, the implications of aligned AI’s in a society of consensus is akin to the old quote from Henry Ford on purchasing a Model-T; you can have any color so long as it’s black.

Listening to this album, stoned in the back of a Toyota 4Runner that had its seats removed and a mattress put in their place, I truly could not conceive of how Shadow made the sounds coming out of the speakers. I immediately had to grab a copy and it changed the way I felt about music.

I grew up in Lawrence and went to KU. The Mizzou hate is real and has deep ties to Bleeding Kansas/Civil War identity. Lawrence was burnt down multiple times during this period, the most infamous being Quantril’s Raid depicted in the film, ‘Ride With the Devil’. Jayhawkers also from this period.
