What would you like to say to other young people?

You are not alone. You are part of a huge network of people who see the gravity of the situation and are acting. Take advantage of the webs of life that support you and lean into community. That is where we will make the difference.

What about older readers?

In an emergency, inaction is also a decision and has consequences. Find your role. You will be happier belonging.

This needs to be exposed for what it is: A huge subsidy to the oil & gas sector, which is lighting the fuse on a huge carbon bomb that will lock us into fossil fuels and terrifying levels of warming. This project will make the world increasingly unsafe for our children. Full stop.

Carney highlights the Indigenous consultation done ahead of this decision to list a crude oil pipeline in the national interest. Which is interesting, because the National Chief of the AFN has explicitly said the major projects office “don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to First Nations.”

Carney greenwashes and also attempts to Indigenous-wash his pipeline, despite: 1) environmental experts making it clear his ocean conservation plan wont change the fact that this is an orca-killing project 2) Indigenous communities already sounding the alarm about insufficient consultation

Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest.

Carney is trying to get ahead of criticisms by saying this announcement is tied to others: carbon capture (a snake oil solution to climate change used to extract more oil from depleted wells) And ocean conservation efforts (good! But not enough to mitigate the pipeline harm!!)
