Saturn Rises Behind A World of Haze - From Ian Regan - flic.kr/p/2fpiy2Z
The Saturn image—captured on May 4, 2005—was created using raw monochrome images taken with the Cassini spacecraft's wide-angle camera (WAC) via red, green and blue filters. Assembly by Val Klavans.

The Titan image—captured on March 31, 2005—was created in a manner similar to that of the Saturn composite. Assembly by Val Klavans.

These two color composites were merged in Paint Shop Pro 9, using a special 'mask' layer, created by Ian Regan and Val Klavans.

I have added a new feature to Echotect, my free open-source web app, that enables the creation of environmental echo fields either manually or by utilizing global building data. janne-s.github.io/Echotect/ Echotect now features a "Terrain" function that reads global elevation data.

Continuing my interest in turning the world into a musical canvas, here's GeoFlute. It turns map terrain into an oscillator - janne-s.github.io/GeoFlute/ Select an area, set the direction a line runs across it, and the elevation along that line becomes one cycle in the wavetable.

Everyone wants to be left in peace. Even a murderer at work does not want to be disturbed. But who can leave others in peace? #cat #photography
Guadeloupe, September 2026

A black-and-white cat sleeps stretched out on a warm, terracotta-tiled outdoor step, its head resting sideways and one front paw curled near its face. A small dry leaf lies beside its nose. The steps rise behind the cat, partly shaded and marked by weathering. Dense, sunlit tropical greenery surrounds the staircase, with broad green leaves hanging overhead and long blades of grass arching across the foreground. Bright sunlight filtering through the plants creates a quiet, secluded garden atmosphere.

'Music,' (1911) is one of the masterpieces of early Futurism. In it, Luigi Russolo explored a fascination with ‘synaesthesia’ the phenomenon whereby one kind of sensory impression is experienced as another. Here, sounds are ‘seen’ as colours.

With Echotect you can turn your hood into a delay: janne-s.github.io/Echotect/ The echo fields can be based on building geometries or points placed as you wish. Audio can be exported as standard impulse responses, a wet render, or aligned stems, or as data to a Max4Live device.

Creating music that is tied to a place raises interesting new questions: how long a journey is needed to realize a work of sufficient scope. Should the physical distance between bass notes be shortened? How does a work unfold when approached from any direction?

a map showing light pollution over the years. we really need to make laws to protect our remaining dark skies, or there won’t be any left.
A four-panel map graphic shows the spread and intensification of artificial nighttime light across the contiguous United States over time. Each panel uses the same U.S. map on a black background, with colored areas indicating how much brighter the night sky is than its natural brightness level.

The top-left panel, labeled “Late 1950s,” shows relatively limited light pollution. Most of the country remains dark or lightly speckled, with brighter concentrations around major cities and developed regions.

The top-right panel, labeled “Mid 1970s,” shows noticeably more artificial light.

The bottom-left panel, labeled “1997,” shows extensive light pollution across much of the eastern half of the country.

The bottom-right panel, labeled “2025,” is the brightest and most densely colored. Large portions of the eastern United States are covered by yellow, orange, red, and pale-colored regions, indicating very high levels of artificial sky brightness.

A legend beneath the maps explains the color scale, progressing from dark to increasingly bright colors:

* Black: less than 11% above the natural brightness level
* Blue-gray: 11–33% above the natural brightness level
* Green: 34–99% above the natural brightness level
* Yellow: 100% above the natural brightness level
* Orange: 3–9 times the natural brightness level, at which point the Milky Way is no longer visible
* Red: 9–27 times the natural brightness level, with fewer than 100 stars visible
* Pale yellow: 27–81 times the natural brightness level, where the North Star is no longer visible
* Pale pink: 81–243 times the natural brightness level, where the Big Dipper is no longer visible

Overall, the graphic illustrates a dramatic increase in U.S. light pollution from the late 1950s through 2025, with artificial nighttime brightness spreading outward from cities and becoming especially widespread across the eastern half of the country.
