But of course, the machine conversation is not free. It comes at the cost of our common life together as teachers, learners, and researchers, colleagues, mentors, and friends. Not to mention, supervising student researchers is our job.

As an American history professor, I regularly read new books, articles, and dissertations, and also evaluate unpublished manuscripts for journals and book publishers. I would not categorize the recent and emerging historiography in the binary way that Ezra Klein does.
There has been a severing of American history into two visions: one that can only see glory and one that can only see suffering and sin.

Bob Brady on Philadelphia voter turnout. If a gun to the head won’t work, what possible other options are there for getting people to vote? 🤷🏻‍♀️
And I cannot understand how come there is such a low turnout," he said.
When asked if the party is doing
anything to change that, he said:
"We can't get a gun, put a gun to their head. You knock on somebody's door.
Nine times out of 10 in this day and
age, nobody answers. We send out, every ward sends out, we send out door knockers. We send out mailers.
We do everything we can."
He says he doesn't know what else the
party can do.
"Anybody have any ideas on how to
increase turnout let me know," he said.

There seems to be a fundamental misconception about journalists and the First Amendment. You don't get 1A rights in exchange for being accurate and impartial. The ideal of journalistic neutrality was inconceivable to the founders. Journalism in the 1780s was partisan! And they still protected it!

Students who did NOT have me for research methods are generally upset they did not learn to use Zotero until their senior year. Some have perfected using it with Google docs (I have not) and they teach one another.

Ideally I have some of these students in the capstone semester (busy grading their drafts now) so they have lots of their sources already saved and annotated in @zotero.org and are way ahead of the game. They are required to use it for capstone research as well.

First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?
