Agree wholeheartedly that waitlist is not acceptable as a “placebo” condition. But I would take it further; waitlist is, perhaps with a few exceptions, never an adequate and acceptable control condition in trials examining treatments for mental disorders.

Moncrieff: “It is not true, therefore, that we ‘know’ that serotonin is involved in mood or behaviour. In the book I describe how there is evidence that serotonin has a detrimental effect on sexual behaviour, but that is about all we can say about its behavioural functions.”
