How does the brain decide? 🧠 Our new @nature.com paper shows that neural activity switches from an 'evidence gathering' to a 'commitment' state at a precise moment we call nTc. After nTc, new evidence is ignored, revealing a neural marker for the instant when the mind is made up. rdcu.be/eGUrv

New preprint...and this one is truly EPIC 🚨. Using a large group of patients with depression and healthy controls (N>800), we show differences in the functional segregation of insular subnetworks. And we can use it to classify! Led by @glassybrain.bsky.social #neuroskyence 🩺 osf.io/preprints/ps...
Graphical summary of the analysis pipelineDecreased similarity within the anterior insula cortex drives group differences between patients with MDD and healthy control participants. This difference is illustrated by shift functions and compared to control regions in the temporal cortex.Patients with depression can be robustly classified based on functional connectivity profiles, and the accuracy improves with increasing symptom severity.

The lateral prefrontal cortex 🧠— which we think of as critical for goal driven behavior + is a target for psychiatric treatments— is fundamentally different in individuals relative to the group averages we’ve often studied. 👇see preprint and thread, led by Zach Ladwig #neuroskyence #PsychSciSky
Image of brain networks in a group average and individual LPFC. Individuals show:
1) smaller FP network
2) more interdigitation
3) conserved motifs
4) idiosyncratic features
This was validated with task and rest fMRI

"Experts cannot unambiguously decide if a failure to attain the same results evidences a failure to replicate the original results or a violation of the ceteris paribus assumption between the original and its direct replication." Open Access: doi.org/10.1007/s108...
Decade-long disagreements about the existence of psychological effects such as the social priming effect are not uncommon in Psychology. Controversies over replication results and disputes over replication quality play a large role in sustained worries about the replication crisis in psychology. In this essay, I aim to explore the underlying reasons behind expert disagreements over replication results. After introducing replications as a scientific tool, I delve into exploring normative decisions and values that enter the evaluation process of replications. I begin by distinguishing three epistemic goals for replications and argue that a replication should be evaluated with regard to its intended function. I then argue that the lack of transparency about intended functions often leads to disagreements. More than that, though, I argue that even if the intended function is known, and thereby the standards by which a replication should be judged, it is difficult to determine if a replication is good at testing what it is supposed to test, which further fuels controversies. I argue this is mainly due to the lack of experimental control and the vast unknown of possible moderation effects. Finally, I argue that an expert’s intended function for a replication may also influence the inferences she might draw from results. Ultimately, I advocate for greater transparency and open communication among researchers. This, I hope should help to reframe discussions as disagreements about intentions and motivations rather than a sign of bad research practice or even a crisis.
