If you aren't familiar with Zenodo, it's worth learning more about. We have been using it to share data and code for a while and are in general very happy with it. In particular, the pipeline from a Github release to a Zenodo DOI for code is really slick.

Given the changes happening to @cos.io and the OSF, I think a lot of researchers will be looking a bit more nervously at the durability of the open components of their pipelines.

@getcoldturkey.com i love your software & have tried it successfully myself. Have you had thoughts about a version teachers/professors could ask students to install & the timer is synchronized (everyone starts and stops at the same time) and the file gets saved to a common location?

I was asked to give a guest lecture this morning for the Health Sciences Department on brain aging @carleton.ca. Sometimes it's really neat to speak to people outside your usual bubble (in my case, Psychology/Cognitive Science). Students across many fields are doing such cool and interesting work!

I've changed my approach to reading & reviewing papers. Rather than reading on my computer, I read on my e-ink device (supernote) & mark them up there, then they're synchronized back to my computer, where I summarize the notes in a document. This has been much better for close reading! #academia

Reading applications for NSERC/OGS, I think there should be a course on how to write excellent letters of recommendation. Some things shouldn't be brought up in LORs (they are actively detrimental or irrelevant). Positive points should be concrete. LORs that are too short aren't helpful. #academia

I wonder if #AI will close academic discourse even further as people mistrust people they don’t already know. We were already being flooded with papers pre-A.I., now we need a way to verify quality in an era when the internet is being hit with a tsunami of content. #academia

📢 Join us this Wednesday, April 2, 15:00-16:00EST to learn about "Multilingualism at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, & education" with Dr. Gigi Luk Everyone is welcome! Join on campus (DT2203) and via Zoom carleton-ca.zoom.us/j/94196446262
promoMultilingualism is an interactional experience between an individual and her environment through multiple languages. Research in multilingualism involves multiple disciplines. In this presentation, I will present an overview of my research program in psychology, neuroscience, and education focusing on the development and learning aspects intersecting with multilingualism. I consider development as an ambient process in response to the environment, whereas learning being an active process involving explicit instructions. These two processes were not mutually exclusive and should be considered when examining multilingualism. Finally, I will share how research in multilingualism can benefit from a transdisciplinary perspective by integrating ecologically grounded questions and laboratory-based research approaches.
Gigi Luk obtained her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from York University, Canada. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Rotman Research Institute at the Baycrest Center before joining the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In January 2019, she joined the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University where she is currently a full professor. Luk’s research on the cognitive and neural consequences of multilingualism extends across the lifespan. She leads a research program that examines how diverse language experiences shape development and learning using neuroimaging methods, behavioral methods, and educational data. Her research has received funding from agencies in Canada and the U.S. She has served as associate editor for Bilingualism: Language and Cognition and is currently an associate editor for Child Development.

for pity’s sake, I am BEGGING university leaders to stop framing this issue in terms of what this will cost the university. people dont care! EXPLAIN WHAT THIS WILL COST THE PUBLIC: closed hospitals and clinics, skipped treatments, loss of access to experimental drugs, unemployment, recession
sreenshot from the new york times reporting that Stanford University’s provost is talking about how the loss of funding from national institutes of health funding will cost the university $160 million. that’s not the way to get this changed — the people think “stanford is rich; no big deal.” leaders need to talk about what this will cost the public
