Agree! Not only how fast but why they are growing at that rate. There are dozens of factors that set envt'l rates. As pro-cultivation as I am, lab growth is completely artificial and the max (or even sub max) rates observed are loosely (at best) related to what is happening in the environment.

One of the most neglected, least understood, and willingly ignored concepts in microbiology is how fast cells grown in their native habitat. We just extrapolate from cultures, which is unrealistic. I wish I could get funds to measure growth in a bunch of habitats and do some foundational work ;(

Perzentil). Rechts steht der Text „Guess what? Heatwave“, der auf eine weitere Hitzewelle hinweist. Die x-Achse zeigt die Monate Mai bis Oktober 2026, die y-Achse die maximale Temperatur in Grad Celsius (ca. 10–35 °C).

The future ocean conditions (+3C, 1000 ppm CO2 and altered N:P ratio) changed the entire community, which is probably an effect of altered substrate availability 🍜

The microbes were surprisingly resilient to the heatwave (+2C for 5 d). Cell division and mortality rates, as well as virus like particle counts were unaffected of the heatwave treatment. Nevertheless, the total abundance increased. Heatwaves are predicted to happen more often in the coming years.
