Beware of the framing though. No-one (not even the US ambassador) suggests that the EU plans to “block” starlink. The EU is not even suggesting to “restrict” starlink as the ambassador suggests. It just intends to reserve some spectrum to EU companies. #dramaqueen.

It is noted that the US uses its support for Ukraine as blackmail to try to hamper the strategic autonomy of EU. This should be used as opportunity to further sever ties with US. The above shows that every EU dependency on US is a potential weapon to do us harm.

I agree that VDL does not openly contest US threats and blackmail, but in practice some things are changing: the cloud sovereignty framework and the EC tenders for cloud services for instance. So it is important that we keep on arguing for tech sovereignty even if VDL may (appear to) appease the US.

But I presume they want an emergency brake like exists for criminal law (Article 82 and 83 TFEU) which effectively would allow member states to opt out of legislation, which would be a very bad idea.

Bovendien vrees ik dat een debat over de regelgeving om zo’n instantie te creëren de aandacht weer enkele jaren zal afleiden van wat er echt moet gebeuren: het handhaven zelf.

Jan Blockx @janblockx.eurosky.social · 12/10/2026

Hyperinflation was a key element in the way Bulgarian oligarchs privatized state assets in the 1990s. They took big loans, bought state assets, then the government caused a hyperinflation and the oligarchs repaid the loans at pennies on the dollar. They got the assets practically for free.
