Important new fish just dropped www.cbc.ca/radio/asitha...

This new fish species is called Snuffleupagus. You can probably guess why | CBC Radio
S. snuffleupagus, a newly described species of fish, is named after the beloved Sesame Street character, Mr. Snuffleupagus, to which it bears an "uncanny" resemblance.

When I used to write for The Guardian, every time I wrote the word “meow” the editors would change it to “miaow”. It used to really get on my wick. Don’t try to make my cats sound like your upper middle class London cats, you fuckers. My cats did not go to your posh cat schools. They say “meow”.

They locked eyes on the convention floor and it was love at first sight.
A black and white photo at a trade show shows a man in a light suit standing inches from a giant Qbert figure, staring right at it as if fully absorbed. Other attendees cluster around them, but the scene centers on his intense focus on the oversized arcade character.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

Love this. In 1999 my friend and I made a 20-foot Atari 8-bit SIO peripheral chain on the floor of my parents' basement (just to see if we could), and then set it up to record music from M.U.L.E., Ultima III, Archon, etc. to DAT. A Win98 PC and PS1 sat idle in the next room. I wish I had a picture.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

A list of printer drivers on a brand new Mac running macOS 26.2, including such hot, popular printers as 9-pin and 24-pin dot matrix models from Epson and HP, and the original HP DeskJet and LaserJet series. Oh, and the other six in the list of 12 choices are label printers, because sure.

I had a dream last night that I bought a new treadmill, and it was really well made and only $250, but the reason it was so inexpensive was that the company found a way to display continuous video ads within the treads, and it forced you to look down at them and watch commercials the whole time
