Came for intelligent conversations with weather colleagues, found remarkable levels of snark, and staying to keep the dream of dignity and decorum alive. Weather radar still fascinates me 📡

For me, this type of long-ish term data tell us more about our changing climate than even large areas of single point record highs across the globe that have become common. 😢 Still, is data like sea ice extent too abstract for those who are in denial?

I recommend this podcast! Evaluating NWS and partner commications for a recent event including discussion of damage indicators. These gents offer critique that is based on decades of experience within the NWS, and a deep desire for best possible NWS performance.

Clovis, NM measured an incredible 5-12"+ of rain in the last 24 hours! Several roads remain closed this morning due to flooding, and the mayor is encouraging everyone to stay home. Remember, never drive through flooded roads. #NMwx

In grad school, I had much self-doubt, observing others in class asking questions & appearing to “get” the material. Later, I realized I needed time to assimilate the content into context before I could “get” it. Though now I remember little from the classes, grad school taught me how to think. 💪

Humanity has a long sad history of doing things because we can, with little reflection per the long term effects. With rare exceptions, I avoid AI consciously, knowing it is also hidden to the user. God help us. 😢

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.
Cartoon image of a street with much of the space taken up by a car with a single driver, while the rest of the street has people tightly packed in a bus, a bus shelter and riding bikes in a bike lane. Adding insult to injury, the driver says “damn those bike paths and bike lanes taking all the space.”

Considerable to catastrophic flooding impacts continue today across parts of the Midwest. Additional rainfall could trigger renewed, life-threatening flooding. Avoid flooded and vulnerable areas, especially at night. If you encounter floodwaters: Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
Key Messages for the Mid-Mississippi and Ohio Valleys (Issued Aug 14, 2026, 8:00 AM CDT)
Additional Considerable-to-Catastrophic Impacts Possible Through Today

• Considerable-to-Catastrophic Flooding Impacts To Continue Today

Significant river flooding continues in SE Indiana; additional rain today may worsen conditions and lead to renewed, potentially life-threatening flooding.

Considerable flash & small stream flooding impacts remain possible across N Illinois & N Indiana. Additional flash flooding possible in Iowa & N Illinois Friday night.

Locally significant flash & urban impacts possible across broader region, particularly Iowa.
• Plan Ahead

Avoid travel throughout flooded/vulnerable areas. Be cautious at night. If flooding is encountered while driving; turn around, don't drown.

Catastrophic: Exceedingly rare, widespread flash/major river flooding expected with extensive inundation/destruction.

Map: "Flood Hazard Outlook: Days 1-3" over the Mid-Mississippi and Ohio Valleys showing Catastrophic impacts (magenta) in SE Indiana, Considerable (dark blue) across IL/IN, and Limited (light blue) across the wider region.
