I feel like you could make kind of a productive analogy between AI agents where they save the user time by wasting everybody else's time and the American approach to vehicle safety where occupant safety is prioritized at the expense of everybody else's. Prosocial? Never heard of her.

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

The Reason Why Colleges Still Fail to Address Sexual Violence
The “Cornell Seven” case highlights what’s wrong with Trump’s Title IX rules — and how the system was always designed to fail.

one nice consolation if sausage zverev clinches the laver cup vs tien is that it doesn't matter at all and ultimately he will be remembered as a vile stain on the sport

bought one last week and it has already drastically improved my life. even as a bike nut who has been a bystander-evangelist for ebikes for years, i underestimated how significantly and quickly my day to day would improve with one. it can be a significant investment but it is SO worth it

Cis people do not understand how much trans people's rights have regressed in just 5 years. 5 years ago, there were none of these restrictions. 19 states banned legal recognition 21 states have bathroom bans 8 states ban gender marker changes on DLs 25 ban gender affirming care for trans youth

lol at the cheer on sausage zverev double fault

james @jamesweir.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
shelton has lost essentially every single important point in this match. all the 15-30s, not closing games or putting pressure on return at all

this match stinks so far imo

normally not in favor of booing for double faults but sausage zverev in a grand slam final is the extremely obvious exception

my hope is that he continues to make lots of loud proclamations about corrupt developers while quietly continuing the affordable housing work that started under taylor/the millage. can't imagine he wants to be mayor for long and he'll need something to run on when dingell retires
230
james @jamesweir.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
oh for sure, but the nimbys aligned with yousef were pretty effective in their messaging around taylor = luxury condos for rich football chuds and yousef = *additional* public investment in affordable housing without funding from market rate (which the vocal nimbys know is essentially not possible)

i often hear people complain that sausage zverev doesn't get enough credit, but credit where do: this is a significant record. it should mentinoed during all of his walk-ons for the rest of his career (or until someone worse breaks it, i guess?)

Zverev sets a record for most consecutive grand slam semifinals reached after having to pay to settle a domestic violence case to prevent an adverse court finding after being issued a penalty order. Some are saying that's a record that will never be challenged.

james @jamesweir.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
i got that, you were v clear! i guess one of my concerns is that he will hold to those maximalist positions, at the expense of incremental progressive outcomes. but i hope to be wrong about that. i don't envy him, being mayor is hard and boring and a totally thankless job lol

and to be clear, i would also like to build more publicly owned affordable housing! but the challenges are significant, and market rate helps fund these projects. the affordable housing director talked about this in detail last night at city council

that's totally fair, and i agree—plenty of real and principled reasons to advocate for a larger public role in housing. i also think it's true that a lot of nimbys voted for yousef bc they think this approach will slow/halt housing dev entirely
290
james @jamesweir.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
and unfortunately i think the aa nimbys are right in this case. mamdami conceded the same point when he flipped on the role of market rate housing, and now sees it as one tool of many to address the housing crisis
0120
james @jamesweir.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
that coalition mostly talked about how all housing should be publicly owned and operated. yousef may believe in that for the right reasons but aa nimbys believe it bc they don't think the funding mechanisms are there and nothing will get built, so they win while pretending to be progressive

james @jamesweir.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
i agree that yousef won bc of his base of mostly youngish dsa and dsa-adjacent liberals and leftists, helped by abdul and taylor/general voter fatigue. but he would've lost without the nimbys. all of the most active anti housing ppl lined up behind him with money and v effective messaging
