Not only should engineers study history, more historians should study engineering. Concrete is the second most used material on earth, a huge part of every economy, but there are about 10 english language academic histories of it. Is it really less important than another take on Lincoln? 🗃️

Cromarty on Wednesday; we harled this in 1999 & the owners have kept on top of maintenance, espc the Crowsteps. We looked at the archaeology of harl, thickness, detailing and galetting,& how it folded over the details. Nothing fancy or imaginative, just looking at precedent. Seamless architecture.

I passed this 1930’s church on Bull Bay Road in Amlwch a few times and just had to take a look. This is the Catholic Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea & St Winefride. It was designed by an Italian architect to look like the upturned hull of a boat reflecting Amlwch’s maritime history.

Inscrit Monument Historique.

"Stone is nature's precast." —Malcolm Holzman
Building with stone and buildings in stone by award-winning U.S. practitioner Malcolm Holzman (b. 1940) are featured in this pictorial album, first published last year in Australia. Holzman, a founder of Hardy Holzman Pfieffer Associates and architect of the acclaimed San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, TX, and the Highland House (Madison, WI), recounts his clarity of vision and passion for stone construction in a concise, jargon-free accompanying text. An appendix lists 17 projects (including public libraries, performing arts centers, museums, and municipal and university commissions), along with construction and engineering details, elevations, and site plans; a biography notes that Holzman's buildings appear in 25 states and that he prefers local quarries whenever possible. Unfortunately, dates are not given for the buildings on display; equally bewildering is the absence of an index or a bibliography of the mostly positive literature regarding Holzman's projects. These flaws aside, the book works well: the photos are evocative, and there's much of interest to both architects and stone masons. https://www.abebooks.com/first-edition/Stone-Work-Designing-Holzman-Malcolm-Images/8026950017/bd#:~:text=Synopsis,and%20pleasing%20to%20the%20soul.

A fascinating streetscape. This is Elbląg (Poland) where post-war reconstruction of its Old Town didn’t really begin until the late 1970s. It was inspired by the historical architecture, and built on the original street grid and building footprints, but with a very distinctive post-modernist style.

I know what he's saying but extremely funny to say this about a country that was created as "British North America", didn't have its own foreign policy until the 1930s, judicial supremacy rested in London until after WWII, and couldn't amend its own constitution into my lifetime.

Entrance to St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 2250 N. McVicker, Chicago. Built in 1964, Belli & Belli, architects
Double bronze-colored doors are surrounded by a circle of tiny golden-bronze tiles. At the top of the circle is a concrete arch. The rest of the wall visible in the photo is dalle de verre glass in a concrete matrix. The glass above the entrance arch depicts Jesus with outstretched hands and a halo.

Detail of the former Union Station in Springfield, Illinois, designed in 1896 by Francis T. Bacon. Bacon was the supervising architect of the Illinois Central Railroad system from the mid-1890s to 1907. He died at in 1909 at age 43.
Reconstructed tower on former Union Station in Springfield, Illinois. The original tower was removed in 1946. The reconstruction is clad is yummy butterscotch colored brick with creamy terra cotta decoration, some of it Sullivanesque. The square tower has four round tourelles, one on each corner, each with its own little pointy roof. The roofs are all red tile. A large clock sits between the tourelles on each side.Below the tower, red Sullivanesque terra cotta decoration covers part of a gabled dormer. The dormer also has an arched window with a yellow terra cotta? panel across the base, creating the illusion of a balcony.Black and white photo of the station in 1947 with the tower removed.

Love this line from Vance because he can’t understand that any neglect of our defence follows from our trust in the US to not invade. He can’t understand trust. He’s saying “you are suckers to trust us and we will punish you for that”, which is a weird approach to trade negotiations but hey

Not surprising that Americans know nothing about Canadian history, but still astounding that they are oblivious to the truth that one constant in Canadian nation-building is American aggression… invasion in 1812 turned an ambivalent American-majority population into a colony loyal to the Crown. /1
