Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

🚨Dream journal moment!🚨Beyond excited to have a poem in the new issue of North American Review alongside some absolutely rockstar poets and writers! Here’s to poetry, a little imagination, and the bizarre interplay of loss, lineage, and memory. @northamerreview.bsky.social
Glass Desk in the Hereafter

I made from my body a glass desk & from the glass desk, I made a wooden chair with mauve fabric. To my right, my brother's prayer card
resting against a framed black & white photograph of a dead dog. At my feet, another dog in her little brown bed breathing heavier
than she probably should. I sit more figuratively than I do literally.
I am sitting inside the paper doll-ness of my own girlhood. I am sitting inside
my mother & inside her mother & inside their teeth which are wider than their smiles. I am sitting inside my father & inside
my brother & when forced to move, I am walking inside the bones of a boy who died like a cliché in the bathroom. I am walking down the hall
& into the kitchen, into the microwave & into the coffee cup. & because my body is the space across which my entire life has unfolded, 1 am a thousand
ghosts that obscure my face in the mirror. I am rain in the hair, your tiny yellow rabbit, wildflowers at the side of the road. Sometimes,
I am a knife cutting through sky. Sometimes, I am carrying around the ball & chain of my own lousy architecture. Sometimes, my body grows
a separate body. I am the stray dog running loose on the interstate as well as God directing the oncoming traffic. Meaning, I am dodging
my own death while egging it on. Meaning, I am in the driver's seat, listening to Celine Dion & my brother is behind the wheel of every pick-up.
He is at the red light & the green light. He is parked at Dunkin' Donuts & just outside DeVito's coin laundry. Mostly, he is beside me with the windows
down, smelling of smoke. & because I am all body, I am breathing into the atmosphere & I am the atmosphere breathing. I am the glass desk & the mauve chair
& the brown bed & perhaps even the little white dog. & because the vast space of my body never changes, the poem is changing all the time.

The birthday of the world

By Marge Piercy
On the birthday of the world
I begin to contemplate
what I have done and left
undone, but this year
not so much rebuilding

of my perennially damaged
psyche, shoring up eroding
friendships, digging out
stumps of old resentments
that refuse to rot on their own.

No, this year I want to call
myself to task for what
I have done and not done
for peace. How much have
I dared in opposition?

How much have I put
on the line for freedom?
For mine and others?
As these freedoms are pared,
sliced and diced, where

have I spoken out? Who
have I tried to move? In
this holy season, I stand
self-convicted of sloth
in a time when lies choke

the mind and rhetoric
bends reason to slithering
choking pythons. Here
I stand before the gates
opening, the fire dazzling

my eyes, and as I approach
what judges me, I judge
myself. Give me weapons
of minute destruction. Let
my words turn into sparks.Poetry Foundation

Happy 2026, everyone! I'm off to bed!
The Year
Ella Wheeler Wilcox

What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That’s not been said a thousand times?

The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.

We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.

We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.

We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our prides, we sheet our dead.

We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that’s the burden of a year.
