Sorry to go against the popular vote here, but I think a variant of this is a great idea if you are writing for non-specialist readers who don’t want to be constantly seeing weird little numbers during the story - but might later want to check up on what you’re saying (as well they might).

Putin hat in der AfD und Teilen der @dielinkebt.de zwar offene Unterstützer. Aber die Mehrheit der deutschen Bevölkerung weiß ganz genau, dass ein Sieg Putins fatal wäre für die Sicherheit Europas. Russland kriegerischer Imperialismus würde damit noch näher an unsere Grenzen rücken.

One thing that really struck me during my book research is just how many big contentious topics of British politics (the voting system, Brexit, the organisation of the armed forces, social cohesion) ultimately lead back to one topic that still gets far too little attention:the future of the union.
