The problem here is, we don’t quite know how to define ‚understanding‘. The proposed behavioural markers here all accompany the phenomenon we dub ‚understanding‘ in humans. What children do when they learn arithmetic etc. Given the absurd amounts of training data LLMs need, I’m sceptical they do it

My theory is that he, like many people panning out as idiots, is an intelligent contrarian. Those appear smart under the right circumstances thanks to their wit. But the main driver is their contrarianism. X considerably worsened the environment for them bc boring reasonaable people are scandalised
