Can I introduce you to the concept of "enshittification"? (Here is where I would put a smile or wink to signify that I am saying this in good humour, but the situation is depressing enough that I can bring myself to do that. Sorry.)

As a rule, no reference letter is ever outright negative, so when you read one you must read between the lines. As a result, the more "personal" a letter is, the more I know whoever wrote it really meant it, while boilerplate letters have no value even if on the surface they are glorious.

If the product you sell is behaving in a way that is non-conforming with your own specifications, is not conforming to the law, and is clearly doing damage, the bare minimum you should do is to recall said product and pay the damages.

This is an important point. AI is not going rogue. It is behaving as it was designed to behave. The ones going rogue are the companies themselves who have violated norms, and are committing crimes daily from stealing IP to cybercrime. It did not have to be this way, but... Techbros.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

Just to be clear: I am not working on structural colour, and my involvement in this topic has been tangential at best. I have no stakes in this. But I still find the sidelining of a whole research community for the sake of pushing a single US group frustrating (and bad journalism).

Ideally there was a viva where the point was discussed. If the examiner misunderstood something (it happens), that is the time to say it.

It is very frustrating to see articles like this completely ignore 20+ years of work on the topic from people all around the world, and present the concept of structural colours like it was the invention of a single US group.
