REP scholars and others who express skepticism about electoral-system reform are right to do so. Reforms now presented as “incremental” alternatives to PR are fundamentally about breaking up the party of inclusion, then constraining representation at the same time.

No AI was used to produce the original set of simulations (borough-wide multiseat districts, MMP with 20 top-up seats). Assigning seats to boroughs demanded judgment calls when the respective district crossed borough lines. This can start conversations about 1P1V and community-of-interest criteria.

Figure 3. Line chart of the effect of expert-rated ideological inconsistency on party like/dislike ratings, by how accurately a respondent perceives the party's positions, with a histogram of observations underneath. The effect is negative for respondents who place parties accurately, shrinks towards zero as their perceptions grow less accurate, and turns positive when they are far off.

Here's the latest version of my working paper on the categorical difference between STV and (list) PR and how not appreciating it may have led, on the basis of U.S. data, to conventional wisdom that PR causes party-system fragmentation. jacksantucci.com/docs/papers/... Feedback welcome. More below.
Do party-list proportional representation (PR) and the single transferable vote (STV) produce different results? These reforms are hotly debated in American politics, but most answers to the question come from non-U.S. cases. This paper replicates and extends the best existing analysis of U.S. data. Gosnell (1939) simulated list PR elections from observed STV first choices in Cincinnati (1925-37) and New York City (1937), finding that majority control of government did not change across the systems. Later work took this to mean that both kinds of PR were equivalent with respect to preference aggregation. Reappraisal and extension of the study do not support that view. All else equal, voters’ lower rankings changed majority control in five of 21 elections, one of which was in the original sample. These results offer fresh perspective on ballot exhaustion and ticket-splitting, which can act as STV-specific causes of fragmentation. The paper explains simply how list PR and STV differ. It concludes with notes on research directions and extending the data to more cases.

IN NEW ISSUE: Polarized attitudes and anti-democratic orientation in the US - Ariel Malka, Christopher M Federico, Thomas H Costello & Adam R Panish examine paradoxical partisan asymmetries in current democratic attitudes. Read more: buff.ly/dVEZQr8 @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social #polsci #polsky
Abstract
Influential perspectives on polarization in the United States imply that partisans will be more willing to degrade democracy when they are ideologically aligned with their own party and negatively oriented toward the opposing party. But psychological accounts of political ideology suggest that conservatives will be especially anti-democratic regardless of partisanship. Integrating insights from these areas, we argue that there are reasons to expect paradoxical partisan asymmetries in the ideological correlates of democratic attitudes. Across numerous surveys we find that cultural conservatism and out-party favorability are reliably associated with anti-democratic orientation among Democrats (but not Republicans), while left-leaning economic attitudes are reliably associated with anti-democratic orientation among Republicans (but not Democrats). These findings provide context for understanding how polarization might impact American democracy. They also suggest that increased centrality of sociocultural conflict and Republican cultivation of a right-wing populist reputation might sort anti-democratic Americans into the Republican Party.
