Putting aside the fantastical thinking and melodrama, Masayoshi Son needs far more than “potential” for his OpenAI play to work out.

If OpenAI is able to go public, it’ll open up some degree of liquidity for SoftBank in the form of outright share sales and margin loans, but the former will tank their holdings of what’s likely to be a heavily-shorted stock, and the latter will connect a great deal of debt to OpenAI’s likely-volatile offering.

If OpenAI can’t go public - due to the AI bubble bursting, due to insufficient interest at a trillion-dollar valuation, or simply because the company stinks and runs out of money - SoftBank will be left with very little leverage or room to maneuver, especially given that S&P downgraded its outlook to negative specifically because of its investments in OpenAI:

The liquidity of SoftBank Group's investment portfolio will worsen because OpenAI now accounts for a bigger share of it. OpenAI Group PBC is a privately held U.S.-based AI research and development startup company. SoftBank Group's additional investment amount will be $30 billion (about ¥4.5 trillion).

This has had a knock-on effect on the rating of the telecoms-focused Softbank Corp, which is now rated BBB, or the lowest-possible rung of investment-grade financing.

To make matters worse, if SoftBank continues to hold a loan-to-value ratio of above 30% for much longer, it runs the risk of its debt getting downgraded even further, which would slam the door shut on its ability to raise money via bonds, which is…well, basically how SoftBank has functioned for the last 10 or 20 years.

As I’ve mentioned, SoftBank’s OpenAI bets have also forced it to sell off its valuable holdings in T-Mobile and NVIDIA, and it’s reaching the outer limits of what it can borrow against its valuable ARM shares. What’s left of Vision Funds 1 and 2 are sunk into questionably-valued companies that will inevitably tank at any sign that SoftBank would dump their shares.

ARM itself is a weak point …

If OpenAI doesn’t go public, there’s a very real possibility that SoftBank collapses, or at the very least is forced to finally put an end to an era of unrivalled financial risk.

It’s easy to like Masayoshi Son - to laugh at his goofy geese-related presentations and his ridiculous statements about the future - but in reality, he’s a deranged, delusional man with too much money and a few lucky breaks that saved him from annihilation.

His future lies in Sam Altman’s hands, and if this is what finally ends his wasteful, reckless reign, it’s a well-deserved punishment for believing every damp, quirked-up white boy to beg him for a billion dollars.

He’s an enabler, enabled by other enablers, that’s created a culture of unbelievable risk and destruction.

I think it’s time for this era to end, and that starts with the unwinding of the Son dynasty.
