Do you notice how these people have never calmed down and said thanks, no matter how extreme the crackdowns and self-destruction get? Because they don’t care, every concession is only ever a new opportunity. And we’ve been conceding to the fuckers relentlessly for *decades* at this point.

As it is Skynet Day, it seems as good a time as any to share that data center based LLM Ai is caught in a death spiral which is going largely unreported in the media. In short, major insurers are creating carve outs for Ai, refusing to insure it, causing corporations to abandon its front facing use.

Getting really bloody sick of saying NO to cookie data then having to scroll through sometimes mile-long mazes to untick 'legitimate interest' boxes because I ACTUALLY MEANT NO. 😑 Ticking no cookies shouldn't mean they still sell my data to 82+ mystery vendors unless I put more time into my no.
A screenshot of a data preference pop up. First box reads 'measure advertising performance'. Tick boxes I've turned off for 'consent (83 vendors)' and 'legitimate interest (62 vendors)'. Second box for 'content performance' has 'consent (35 vendors)' and 'legitimate interest (20 vendors)'.

UK friends. Time to fill in yet another skewed and pre-loaded government "consultation". HMRC really hates creatives, eh? Short version: UKG wants writers etc. to pay tax monthly and change our "projections" online every time we ... don't get paid regularly. BECAUSE WE ARE FREELANCERS.

Another example of political perceptions of the world not matching reality. Freelancing is becoming more important to the economy as there are fewer large employers, but governments treat this as an aberration to be squashed.

Anyway, we've seen this before. Please enjoy my one and only article in an academic journal, on the topic of tech billionaires forced to weep salty tears by their unstoppable personal potency hdsr.mitpress.mit.edu/pub/wz35dvpo...
As such, the ability to understand AI, or indeed any technology, is not essential to interrogate this chain of events, which has been exercises in narrative framing and control. The
project of Altman and his merry band of doomsayers appears to be to capture power and create obfuscation by making new myths and legends-equating the role of computer scientists and technology executives with Superman, weeping over Lois Lane before he turns back the world, or Oedipus, distraught after murdering his father. If there has been a teachable
moment, then the lesson has not been one about the potential of technologies but about the importance of media literacy.

Thinking about why public services should not be designed in the same way as private-sector ones. I've 5 points so far: (1) CHOICE: with v few exceptions, we get to choose the private-sector digital services we use but most public services need to be universal at the point of access (1/n)

Yesterday a group of us put our heads together to think about the questions that should be asked of Starmer's plans for AI in government - you might have seen this nod to it in Politico this morning. These are for journalists, politicians, and anyone with an interest in pro-democracy tech (1/3)
Labour’s escalating claims around the potential use of  AI in government are borne out of relatable constraints and welcome ambition for Britain but

We are deeply concerned that in an effort to increase efficiency and find savings, the UK could end up wasting £100s of millions of public money in failed projects. This risks damaging public services - and ultimately holding Britain back -  rather than taking the opportunity to make them fit for the future.

It might sound like a silver bullet but we can’t just shoehorn AI into existing services.

Here are 10 questions that we believe the Government needs to demonstrate it has answers to before signing away millions of pounds of taxpayer’s money with no break clause on the contracts if things go wrong
