Do you notice how these people have never calmed down and said thanks, no matter how extreme the crackdowns and self-destruction get? Because they don’t care, every concession is only ever a new opportunity. And we’ve been conceding to the fuckers relentlessly for *decades* at this point.

As it is Skynet Day, it seems as good a time as any to share that data center based LLM Ai is caught in a death spiral which is going largely unreported in the media. In short, major insurers are creating carve outs for Ai, refusing to insure it, causing corporations to abandon its front facing use.

This truly frightens me. No matter how often the flaws in age verification softwares are stated and how much evidence is produced - this is still seen as the only method to “protect the children”. This desire for easily stated ‘solutions’ that can be enacted in a single term is a shitty way to go.

Getting really bloody sick of saying NO to cookie data then having to scroll through sometimes mile-long mazes to untick 'legitimate interest' boxes because I ACTUALLY MEANT NO. 😑 Ticking no cookies shouldn't mean they still sell my data to 82+ mystery vendors unless I put more time into my no.
A screenshot of a data preference pop up. First box reads 'measure advertising performance'. Tick boxes I've turned off for 'consent (83 vendors)' and 'legitimate interest (62 vendors)'. Second box for 'content performance' has 'consent (35 vendors)' and 'legitimate interest (20 vendors)'.

Omg so much this. I cannot even begin to understand why modification of basic styles has gotten worse year on year. And boy that bar was low even a decade ago. There are more different ways to indent or sort out bullets over multiple apps and OSs than there are types of microwave controls

I’ve only done a few and find it difficult. Especially if sharing screen or in a webinar mode when it literally feels like you’re talking to no-one. That’s when the “what am I doing, talking like I know stuff” anxiety kicks in the most.

UK friends. Time to fill in yet another skewed and pre-loaded government "consultation". HMRC really hates creatives, eh? Short version: UKG wants writers etc. to pay tax monthly and change our "projections" online every time we ... don't get paid regularly. BECAUSE WE ARE FREELANCERS.

Another example of political perceptions of the world not matching reality. Freelancing is becoming more important to the economy as there are fewer large employers, but governments treat this as an aberration to be squashed.

The protein folding problem is one of simulation. To fully understand why proteins fold in a certain way, we would need to fully simulate their dynamics.

Not surprised, but saddened. Seems whilst some pols are looking at what citizens actually need, the majority of the body politic are doing whatever they need to hold tight to their power. Believing whatever technological flim flam suits this purpose - whether real (rarely) or hyped magical thinking

Anyway, we've seen this before. Please enjoy my one and only article in an academic journal, on the topic of tech billionaires forced to weep salty tears by their unstoppable personal potency hdsr.mitpress.mit.edu/pub/wz35dvpo...
As such, the ability to understand AI, or indeed any technology, is not essential to interrogate this chain of events, which has been exercises in narrative framing and control. The
project of Altman and his merry band of doomsayers appears to be to capture power and create obfuscation by making new myths and legends-equating the role of computer scientists and technology executives with Superman, weeping over Lois Lane before he turns back the world, or Oedipus, distraught after murdering his father. If there has been a teachable
moment, then the lesson has not been one about the potential of technologies but about the importance of media literacy.

Folks, I’m seeing a lot of people saying “well, company x has my biometrics/PII why should I care if company y does?” You should care about *every* company that has your data because they will eventually be compromised, and your data will be sold and exploited.

the far right is arguing we should ban brown people from being MPs and the girl guides and the WI are banning trans women from being members. the consensus opinion from those with power seems to be that offering any opposition would threaten their own position and so is, regrettably, not worth it.
