This got me thinking about heterodox ideas. Not outright crank-level stuff but opinions in the field of palaeontology that are in the minority. I definitely have some, e.g. I still think Palorchestes had a trunk, or that thalattosuchians really aren't mesoeucrocodylians. Anyone care to share theirs?

Some of the studies I made of the extinct megatooth shark Otodus megalodon, for an upcoming commission I can hopefully share soon. Megalodon is known almost exclusively from fossil teeth, which have not been found articulated with jaws.

Xenorhinotherium & Macrauchenia my beloveds This was mostly an exercise in achieving different fur textures in Blender, as well as an excuse to make an infographic since I haven't made one of those in a while. #SciArt #artbyjulio
A simple infographic showing a mostly tan, short-haired Xenorhinotherium and a dark brown, long-haired Macrauchenia against a solid background, with a human silhouette for scale. Each animal has a lineart of South America besides it showing an estimated range, and its scientific name below it.

What in the name of Beetlejuice ARE these things? They're zebra morphs of 'squat lobsters', likely in genus Allogalathea. They're not true lobsters & are more closely related to hermit crabs. Now which one is white with black stripes & which is black with white stripes? (📷: hoopderscotch)

When I saw the Titanosaur exhibition at NHM London with friends, @dinomaster.bsky.social suggested I drew a Pudgy Patagotitan. I had a hard time pudgifying what is already _beyond_ pudgy, and could have pushed the exaggeration much further. I merely ended up with a short-legged titanosaur.
Ink drawing of a Patagotitan with, despite earnest attempts, only slightly exaggerated proportions, seen in side view, facing and walking towards the right. It has a gently silly expression at least.

If that's having "two brains", then why not call the spinal cord a brain and say we've got three? Why leave the forebrain out of this entirely? They have equally distinct developmental histories.

But again, we already knew the hindbrain was developmentally distinct from its two flanking tissues, the midbrain and spinal cord, that lots of interesting genes get activated at the boundary between two of them, etc. And that, because of this, these neural segments go on to do different things.

The paper behind the PR shows the hindbrain lineage becomes distinct very early in embryonic development. If you want to make stem cells into hindbrain neurons, you have to send them through the hindbrain path first. It's solid work! From a quick skim, the researchers seem to have done a nice job.

We've know the hindbrain is distinct for decades—the midbrain hindbrain boundary was identified as a key signaling center back when I still had a research career. This 2012 paper cites references on the topic going back to the 1990s.

Some of the same factors are used to pattern all of these, but because of differences in developmental history and the presence of distinct environments at different points in our body, the cells of these segments interpret even the common signals in different ways.

For non-developmental biologists: we don't think of ourselves as segmented (that's for insects, after all), but our nervous system is segmented. The forebrain is set up different than the midbrain, which is set up differently than the hindbrain, which is set up differently than the spinal cord.

Ok, this "there are two separate brains" thing appears to be making the rounds, and I want to be absolutely clear: this is a press office overhyping some perfectly reasonable science that won't come as a surprise to most developmental biologists.

5,000 sols on Mars. Congrats, Curiosity! science.nasa.gov/photojournal... ⚒️🧪
While parked at a sand ridge nicknamed “Chocolatal,” NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover used its black-and-white navigation cameras to capture panoramas at two times of day. The first was taken on Aug. 30, 2026, at 9:56 a.m. local Mars time; the second was taken on Sep. 2, 2026, at 5:39 p.m. local Mars time. Those dates correspond to the 5,000th and 5,003rd Martian days, or sols, of the mission.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"
