voLuke 13: 22-30
Who will be saved? This is the question posed to Jesus.
The answer is not easy. Nominal membership (I call myself a Catholic) and outward belonging (but I was baptized) will not suffice. For Jesus, the one criterion for gaining final entrance into God's Kingdom is doing the will of God. It is a narrow gate, accessed only by accepting our share of the cross and there is an urgency about doing that. All those who accept Jesus, and live accordingly, will find themselves inside, while those who fail to live the call will be locked out.
Reflections for the Week
1. In your life, what have been the narrow gates you have passed through?
2. When you hear the first and Gospel readings, do they challenge you to think of those you would shut out?
Who are they?
3. The 1st Reading sets the scene - no nation on the earth will be excluded from the Lord's holy mountain; all will be brothers and sisters. In these days, when stories abound about people being "rounded up" and "snatched" and businesses being raided, do you see immigrants and refugees in that light?

My statement on Donald Trump's threat to deport me and his praise for Eric Adams, who the President "helped out" of legal accountability.

The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported. Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.

His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation.

That Trump included praise for Eric Adams in his authoritarian threats is unsurprising, but highlights the urgency of bringing an end to this Mayor’s time in City Hall. At the very moment when MAGA Republicans are attempting to destroy the social safety net, kick millions of New Yorkers off of healthcare and enrich their billionaire donors at the expense of working families, it is a scandal that Eric Adams echoes this President’s division, distraction and hate.

Voters will resoundingly reject it in November.
