Velvet Ants are not ants, but solitary wasps. Only males fly; females like this one are wingless. They run almost nonstop, looking for burrows of other ground-nesting wasps and bees, which they parasitize. They can sting but are not aggressive. She was small, under 1 cm. Pryor Mountains, Montana 🐙🌿
A macro photo of a female velvet ant (a type of fuzzy, wingless wasp) on pale orange sand. The insect's main color is dark orange above, with dark legs and black sides & belly.

Brian’s daycare captured a photo of one of my favorite things he does, where he jumps up on you and puts his forehead against you and stays like that. It’s his hug. He does it with them, too.
A shot from above of the top of my dog’s head, with a hand gently rested on him.

OH MY GOD!! WE CAN SEE AURORAS ON NEPTUNE FOR THE FIRST TIME THANKS TO JWST!!!!
On the left, an enhanced-color image of Neptune from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Neptune is a vibrant blue, with a lighter blue color at the edges. The image is labeled "Hubble." At right, that image on the left is combined with data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. The cyan splotches, which represent auroral activity, and white clouds, are data from Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), overlayed on top of the full image of the planet from Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3. This image is labeled "Hubble + Webb." Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Heidi Hammel (AURA), Henrik Melin (Northumbria University), Leigh Fletcher (University of Leicester), Stefanie Milam (NASA-GSFC)

High quality image of one of the heaviest and most luminous stars in the known universe (Hubble). Processing: Judy Schimdt. www.flickr.com/photos/geckz... 🔭 🧪
This Hubble Space Telescope image showcases WR 124, a Wolf-Rayet star, enveloped by a luminous nebula. The brilliant central star illuminates the surrounding material, creating a vibrant orange glow punctuated by dark, wispy patches of dust and gas. This nebula, formed by the powerful stellar winds ejected from WR 124, reveals the star's dynamic interaction with its environment. The image captures the complex structure and turbulent nature of the nebula, highlighting the distinct features of this massive, evolved star against the backdrop of a dark cosmos speckled with distant stars.

I disagree with those who, in the midst of the storm, are saying that ‘we all are on our own’ - It isn’t true. It can’t be true. Need proof? The Butterfly Nebula contains millions of stars and is literally ‘astronomically nextdoor’ 🙏🏽😌 #astronomy #hubble #NASA #ESA #photography #togetherness

The Butterfly Nebula from Hubble

Hubble Space Telescope

Stars can make beautiful patterns as they age -- sometimes similar to flowers or insects. NGC 6302, the Butterfly Nebula, is a notable example. Though its gaseous wingspan covers over 3 light-years and its estimated surface temperature exceeds 200,000 degrees C, the aging central star of NGC 6302, the featured planetary nebula, has become exceptionally hot, shining brightly in visible and ultraviolet light but hidden from direct view by a dense torus of dust. This sharp close-up was recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope and is processed here to show off remarkable details of the complex planetary nebula, highlighting in particular light emitted by oxygen (shown as blue), hydrogen (green), and nitrogen (red). NGC 6302 lies about 3,500 light-years away in the arachnologically correct constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius).

WAKE UP BABE, THE FIRST NEW HUBBLE IMAGE OF 2025 DROPPED!!!
Many mostly small, bright objects scattered over a dark background in space. In the top half on the right is an elliptical galaxy, a round light larger than the others, with a slightly warped ring of light around it. In the bottom half there is a barred spiral galaxy, big enough that we can see its bluish arms and its core in detail. Other objects include distant galaxies and nearby stars.

My deepest condolences to those affected by the California wildfires and to all suffering from wars around the world. We are living in turbulent times; our planet shows its pain, and society remains divided. Hopefully, one day we’ll polarize our perspectives less and recognize the power in our unity
This stunning image captures a vibrant galaxy set against a backdrop of deep space. The galaxy displays a prominent spiral structure, with bright swirling arms composed of pink and blue hues that signify regions of star formation and interstellar matter. A bright core is evident at the center, radiating light and energy, while streams of gas and dust stretch outward, hinting at dynamic cosmic activity.

Surrounding the galaxy, an array of sparkling stars is scattered throughout the dark expanse, each varying in brightness and size, creating a sense of depth and vastness. The overall composition offers a breathtaking view of the universe, celebrating the intricate beauty of galactic formations and the mysteries that lie beyond our own planet.

This space artwork serves as an inspiring representation of astrophysical phenomena, evoking wonder and curiosity about the cosmos and our place within it.
