And he hears—feels—the way her breath catches, the way her body goes still in surprise.

He forges on regardless.

He says again, his words near babbling; breathless even, spoken with a flood of emotion that he knows is quite beyond him to control— "Tell me... tell me you'll miss me, and you'll hate to see me go. That my absence will hurt you, that it will break us both, and I will bound myself to you and never leave. I won't."

The winters had always been harsh in Coerthas – never as bad as the days that her people knew not were coming in their futuure, but harsh nontheless. The lakes and rivers froze over, fields were blanketed in thick layers of snow, and the winds whipped down off the mountains. Every child grew up with the knowledge of the dangers of the winters.

All of those warning had gone from his mind, though, as Stephanivien ran away from his sister, laughing as he chased her with a snowball.

Day 27: Bonus Wasn't gonna write anything today then I thought of this silly self indulgent modern au thought and had to lmao. It isn't often that Gwen gets pieces of me, but she does get to have my lack of chill about football

"Your job is to catch the fucking ball," Gwen groaned, throwing herself back against the couch dramatically. "I hate this game."

"You know you can turn it off," her brother said evenly from across the room, making Gwen spin around and glare at him.

"If you touch that remote, I'll kill you right here," she spat, making him simply roll his eyes and return to whatever it was that he was working on – probably grading papers, if she had to guess.

"Please no murder in the house, I just cleaned the carpets," her dad sighed, coming into the living room with a bowl of chips. "Maashtaya, let your sister whine about her team, we both know she doesn't hate it. Gwen, don't threaten to kill your brother, he knows not to touch the remote," he added, sitting down beside her on the couch.

Gwen just mumbled an agreement and heard her brother sigh something in response. "I do hate it," she grumbled, turning her attention back to the screen just as the ball was snapped.

The wood was silent, only the sound of the wind blowing through the young trees adding to the peace. Even years after the Calamity, life as it'd once been hadn't quite returned to the West Shroud. Nearly a decade and a half past and the scars on the land were still prominant, even if the trees had started to recover and grass carpeted the ground again. There wasn't an animal in sight. No chirping birds nesting in the trees, no tracks cutting through the grass… even the wildlife knew that this was still a solemn place, a memorial.

Foulques walked silently through the regrowth, doing his best to disturb as little as possible.

G'raha curled up as small and tight as he could in his pile of furs. The other children were playing outside and daring each other to jump in the freezing river. He knew this because he had been dared yesterday, and now he was utterly infirm due to the resulting sickness.

'Dared'. Pushed was a more apt word. G'raha tugged the furs up to his chin and pouted. He had been minding his own business, on his way back to the sanctuary of the children's rhasht after finishing his chores, when G'rohlo had spied him. The older boy was an unimaginative oaf, so naturally, G'raha had ended up submerged in the deep, ice-cold river.

As Erenville will sooner admit, with a certainty that prompted no question, that Jazzele, of all people, was categorically beautiful on a good day. Whether she was enveloped by the hues of broad and brilliant daylight, or when she was clad in the dull shadows of the most poorly lit alleys.

She was beautiful fresh out of bed with mussed hair and kiss-swollen lips. Beautiful when she was trudging through mud and chasing after an evasive wild hippo.

She was beautiful when she glowed with the strength of her fiercest convictions. Beautiful even when she was blood drenched and entangled with death, with the hush of a subtle darkness sweeping across her skin.

Jazzele was—is—entirely too beautiful.

But here and now—she all but gleams with the light of something outright incandescent.
