#FFXIVWrite2026 is about a week away! (I know, I know, me too.) If you're thinking about participating, here are some thoughts on what I've learned about how to set myself up for success as I get ready for my fourth year. Free advice, worth what you paid, etc. I believe in you. We've got this. 🖤

Kit’s FFXIV Write advice & cheerleading!

Take as much friction out of the getting-started process as you can. Set up a folder in your writing software of choice and stick some blank docs in there so you can just hit the ground running when the day’s word drops.

Write when there’s time, not when there’s inspiration.

Lots of us have more ideas than we have drafts. This is a perfect time to see if a day’s word moves you to flesh out one of those plot bunnies a little more.

Related to the above: embrace the joys of in media res. Write the bits of the scene you have a vision for and worry about the rest later.

If you’re someone who’s motivated by goals and metrics, set up a tracker in whatever way works for you. I like to set a secret word count goal for myself that I don’t tell anyone about until the month is over.

Experiment! This is a great opportunity to try writing in a different tense, or for an NPC you haven’t written before, or play around with different formats like epistolary or poetry. This is supposed to be fun, so take the opportunity to play!

It’s okay if you skip or miss a day (or two, or ten). Seriously. I promise. You can make it up later if it’s really going to bother you, but try not to let it derail you.

Embrace the messy first draft. It doesn’t have to be complete, it doesn’t have to be good, it just has to be words.

Take breaks. Be kind to your wrists. HAVE FUN.

12 years ago today my sister and I started playing this funny little game. I originally started as a lala named Lei Lei dreaming of being a Black Mage. I've found and lost friends, have done and conquered all of the content. But most of all, I have made many memories. Thanks FFXIV for the fun! 🫶💗

drawing from observation is not easy, but I think you should not give up on it! You are perfectly capable of doing it, and by training this skill you enrich your understanding of forms immensely. It takes practice but I am confident you don't need to rely on tracing, you can do it.
