Gave this warmup question to my class today. Students had to think carefully about the function and what x represents in each statement. Great discussions. @studymaths.bsky.social #ITeachMath #MathSky
A warm up question for math class. The text at the top reads, "Match each statement to its corresponding function." The central image is a simple diagram of a square with a single diagonal line drawn from the top-left to the bottom-right corner.

On the left side, there is a list of four statements:
1. Calculates the perimeter of a square given its area.
2. Calculates the area of a square given its diagonal.
3. Calculates the diagonal of a square given its area.
4. Calculates the area of a square given its perimeter.

Below the square diagram, a caption states: "For each problem, x may represent a different part of the square."

On the right side, there is a list of four algebraic functions:
A) f(x) = (x/4)^2
B) f(x) = 4 * sqrt(x)
C) f(x) = sqrt(2x)
D) f(x) = x^2 / 2

Math Game Monday: Coordinate Gomoku
This is a fun and challenging logic/strategy game for upper-elementary and middle school. One of my favorites! Many parents remember struggling to learn math. We hope to provide a better experience for our children. And one of the best ways for children to enjoy learning is through hands-on play. So what are you waiting for? Let's play some math! In this editorial, I explore what it means to teach (mathematics) in a time of polycrisis. I use Anna Tsing's argument from "The Mushroom at the End of the World" to unearth the capitalist logics that underlie much of our educational enterprise to reimagine new possibilities. #iteachmath #EduSky

Accurate 😅 (although they missed 21, which was the scourge of my early teaching career!) xkcd.com/3184/ #MathsToday
An XKCD comic in the usual black outline cartoon style on a white background.

[A banner is hanging from the ceiling with a large line of text above a smaller one:]
Mathematical society
2025 meeting
[Below the banner there are four people, three of them are standing close together to the left with Hairbun leftmost addressing Cueball and Megan who is looking at her. Ponytail is standing to the far right next to a whiteboard, and is using a marker to circle in the last number on the board.]
Hairbun: Any other new developments from the year to cover before we wrap?
Cueball: Oh, the teens picked a new funny number.
Megan: Aww, I'm glad to hear they're still doing that.
Ponytail: I'll add it to the list.
[The board contains two columns of numbers, with the first having a text behind it, thus covering both columns. The last number is the new one circled in by Ponytail. From top in reading order they are:]

Pattern block play with heptagons–a side-by-side look at three arrangements. #21CenturyPB #iTeachMath
There are six images arranged into two rows. The top row shows three different arrangements of heptagons made with 21st Century Pattern Blocks, while the bottom row shows the corresponding outlines of each arrangement. In all three designs, the heptagons are arranged around a central hexagon. In the first column, the heptagons point toward the center; in the second column, they point away from the center; and in the third column, they point sideways.

More from @catlintucker.com on elevating Tier 1 instruction with differentiated small groups: edut.to/3L4mv7b #EduSky
“Classrooms today are composed of increasingly diverse skills, instructional needs, learning preferences, and language proficiencies. The teacher-led station in the station rotation model gives educators a structure to embrace that diversity rather than feel overwhelmed by it. When small group instruction becomes a regular part of Tier 1 instruction, differentiation shifts from being an occasional accommodation to an everyday best practice.” —Catlin Tucker, Author, Speaker & Trainer
