Today I heard someone use the Human Centipede as a way to explain why large model AI is inevitably heading towards its own self destruction by tainting its future inputs, and honestly? It was a beautiful teaching metaphor.

Today while I was driving from my school (where I teach) to the high school (where I coach) I saw a kid with a backpack on laid out on the sidewalk at the corner. Fearing the worst, I stopped and called out, "Are you okay?" Kid popped right up to sitting. "Yeah, I'm fine!" Why are kids.

Does focusing more on academic achievement lead to more academic achievement? Maybe. But it may also make school less enjoyable and less interesting, which may in turn lead to lower levels of attendance, more misbehavior, and deeper disengagement. And that would undermine academic achievement. 5/n

Treated myself to breakfast. Waitress: You want the normal hash browns with that? Me: Oh yes, I love potatoes. I am basically a potato that is a person. Waitress: And potatoes are basically perfect in every form. I don't think she was hitting on me, but if she had been, that would have worked.

Ben and I went to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo yesterday (thanks to @ohioea.bsky.social). The weather was perfect and a lot of animals were out and about and active. But the thing Ben got most excited to see was this birch tree in the Wilderness Trek area.
A photo of a white man posing, leaning on a lovely birch tree.A photo of a white woman leaning on a birch tree. She would like to know whether you think the length and cut of her trousers is flattering or not. She's trying something new, fashion-wise, and isn't sure whether it's working because she has some insecurity.

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare. In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

Apropos of nothing, I once brought a reusable water bottle to a job interview and forgot it in their restroom. I knew I didn't want that job so even though I was still nearby when I realized, I didn't want to go back and get it. Sorry to that water bottle.

What's a small kindness you witnessed or experienced that still has an impact on you? Years ago, I saw a school parent helping someone learn how to use the local public bus system. I think about her clarity and patience and how that was not her job but a need she saw that she decided to fill.

I found this on Lesson Pix and laughed and cried and laughed.
A photo of a computer screen. The computer screen displays a website called LessonPix, that provides pictures and ways to make the pictures into school resources. This picture is titled "Tried" and is tagged "almost done," "frustrated," "give up," "tired," and "tried." The image itself is of a person just in front of the finish line, lyjng completely prone and probably still. There are color swap options and more details/download options as well.

Me: *trying to teach* Kids: Do you have a son? Do you have a daughter? Do you have ANY kids? Me: No. Kids: Do you have a dog? Me: Yes. Kid: Oh! That's basically like having a kid. Me: It is not. If I made a kid eat their dinner in a dog crate, I would go to jail.

One of my favorite resources for teaching is @lessonpix.bsky.social. It makes it easy to make materials for ALL my students. I also love that the images are not perfect and feel very human-made. Even when I don't use LessonPix directly, they inspire me to use my own drawings sometimes.

But speaking of staying in one's lane, can we PLEASE switch the default position from "It's fine to use 'AI' for this thing I'm not an expert in" to "Yeah, I'd be really skeptical of any use cases and need to see strong evidence that it's okay, but I'm not the one who can produce that evidence"?

So, I was always fascinated by stories/movies/video games where there was some ancient technology and it's so cool it's practically magic but it fell out of use in the past and is in ruins in the present. How could that happen, I wondered. These days I wonder about that less frequently.

This year I got an appointment book and have been using highlighters to note where I need to be and when. This is what my week as a union building rep/cart teacher/speech and debate coach looks like (before I start filling in more details).
Two pages of an open appointment book. I have used highlighters to block out times throughout the week. The colors are not exactly in ROYGBIV order but it's close. Usually I swipe the highlight across a line, but there are a couple of squared off purple time blocks instead.
