Ugh. Farage has done nothing for Clacton except humiliate it. His idiotic by-election is basically a massive tantrum at being scrutinised over his v dodgy finances. He’s unfit for public office. He just wants power. This is all a waste of everyone’s time. He’s a loser even if he wins. (iPaper)
Farage odds on to hold Clacton seat but nationwide poll backs Binface

Nigel Farage is expected to hold on to his Clacton Parliamentary seat with the odds placed at 1-100 following a boycott from the main political parties.

While most bookmakers have Far-age down to win 1-100, rather than the early 1-7 odds before his main opposition dropped out, the latest polling shows he would be beaten by Count Binface if the whole nation was voting.
Polling by More in Common shows that 37 percent of Britons would prefer to be represented by the self-professed "intergalactie space war-rior" dressed in a long silver cape and dustbin-shaped helmet, while 32 per cent would back Farage.
But the likely victory in Clacton has led Parage to believe he could
"replicate this level of support across Essex", with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch's seat of North West Essex in his sights.
He told The Telegraph that Reform will "pump big resources" into Essex, suggesting that halfthe Shadow Cabinet - including the opposition leader - could lose their seats at the next election.
Badenoch recently said in a message to Clacton residents that they
"deserve better" than Farage, criti-cising the "needless election" and adding that he should "not be ex-empt" from the Parliamentary rules.
His decision to force a bv-election by standing down last month to hold a "people versus the establishment" vote may have backfired. The opposition branded it a
"media cireus" and an attempt to evade scrutiny, as stepping down as an MP paused an investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog into his finances.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, had been investigating undeclared donations, including a £5m gift from Thai-based cryptocurrency billionaire Harborne.

That investigation was paused when Farage resigned his seat, but will resume if he wins the by-election.
If the Parliamentary watchdog rules against him, he could face a second by-election - this time, against all the major political parties.

Good analysis of Farage’s disrespectful, self-serving “people v the establishment” garbage where “people” are only the small minority who agree with him. The rest of us don’t count. “Populism usually ends in the erosion of democracy, and Farage's nonsensical by-election couldn't sum that up better”
Why Nigel's no longer a man of the people
Populism usually ends in the erosion of democracy, and Farage's nonsensical by-election couldn't sum that up better
Daniel Finkelstein @dannythefinkExtracts:

Count Binface is not the joke candidate in the Clacton by-election. To accord him that status requires taking Nigel Farage’s mirthless gag seriously. Even his own party doesn’t do that. On Monday Farage’s deputy Richard Tice was talking about a distant time when his leader was no longer in parliament. He apparently hadn’t noticed he already wasn’t in parliament, having resigned from it. By his casual words Tice revealed he knew what everyone else knows. That the whole thing is a meaningless stunt.

To be fair, Farage did accompany his otherwise grimly unamusing comedy act with a genuinely funny statement. “The really big question that I want to pose is: do we want leaders that know how to make money?” he asked the audience tuned in to watch his Flounce of the Year show. It clearly hadn’t occurred to him that one can answer “yes” to this question without also answering “yes” to, “Do we want leaders who know how to accept a £5 million gift from a Thai cryptocurrency billionaire without declaring it?” That one would be a “no” from me.

We might want more successful entrepreneurs in parliament while still replying “perhaps not” to, “Do we want leaders with convicted fraudsters in their inner circle?”

I only stopped laughing when he reached the punchline. Because his resignation I found completely unamusing. Part of this is for a slightly pompous reason.

I regard becoming an MP as a very serious undertaking and the gaining of that office a true honour. So it pains me to see someone treat it frivolously.

An objection which I hope is more widely shared is my problem with the question he ludicrously wishes the people of Clacton to adjudicate: the people or the establishment?

The aim is not merely to reject the authority of anyone trying to hold Farage and Reform to account. It is to deny their (our) humanity. Being a “real person” is not a natural endowment, apparently, but something achieved and sustained only by agreeing with Nigel Farage.

absolutely spot on re Nigel Farage’s speech - from Tom Peck
He was angry, mainly, at all the attention that has been given to the highly unusual sources of his now-considerable wealth. But don't worry, hes definitely earned it.
"Going back to the Nineties, I was in the commodity markets and I had a very, very good, high-earning career," he explained. "I gave that up at a huge cost. Being a member of the European parliament for 20 years cost me a huge amount of money." Being a member of the European parliament for 20 years earned Nigel Farage about two or three million euros. He also, as luck would have it, will be 63 next year and so eligible for a nice little £80,000 a year pension for his dedicated service to Brussels.
Since then, he has, he explained,
"had the equivalent of a lottery win".
This lottery win is the f5m that appeared in his bank one morning, shortly betore he became an MP, and which he didn't think it would be necessary to declare to anyone.
The standards commissioner is investigating this matter so we don't wish to pre-empt his findings, but if he does conclude it was the
"equivalent of a lottery win", then the matter will surely be declared over. Until now, it hadn't been known that millions of other people had bought tickets from the Thai-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne and one lucky man, called Nigel Farage, had been randomly chosen as the winner.
