After the US entered the war in 1941, Watson Lake Airport became a military facility under US control, serving as an important refuelling stop for American fighter aircraft bound for Alaska. Further improvements were made to the airport, including the construction of the control tower on the side of the Air Terminal Building, and a military hangar. Barracks, staff housing, mess halls, apartments and storage facilities were constructed nearby, but have since been demolished.
In June 1944, under the terms of its agreement with the US, the RCAF took over control of the airport. In 1957, control was transferred to the Canadian Department of Transport, and in October 1996, responsibility for the Watson Lake Airport was transferred to the Yukon Government.
The Alaska Highway was routed to link these airports and smaller landing strips of the Northwest Staging Route, providing logistical support for the operations and crews at the airports. The airports, in turn, supplied the highway construction crews with personnel and supplies. Post war, the Watson Lake Airport served the mining industry. Since 1988, however, the airport has almost exclusively been used for private and charter flights.

⛈️New in Geo!⛈️ 'The window of opportunity: Linking climate history and storms' by A. Jardine, K.A. Selby & @davidhiggins.bsky.social This paper uses the Royal Charter storm of 1859 to explore the implementation of long-term risk reduction measures following disasters. doi.org/10.1002/geo2...
Screenshot of a paper abstract in Geo: Geography and Environment by A. Jardine, K.A. Selby & D. Higgins (2025) entitled: 'The window of opportunity: Linking climate history and storms' with an orange banner at the top.

High magnitude storms have impacted coastal maritime communities, instigating national government responses. Storm catastrophes can open a ‘window of opportunity’ that enables the implementation of new long-term disaster risk reduction measures. Analysis of historical storm events using written newspaper records identified the Royal Charter storm of 1859 as a catastrophe that opened a window of opportunity. The resulting actions prompted the first national (UK) storm early warning systems which continue today as the Meteorological Office forecasts. This historical case study demonstrates how the effective use of the window of opportunity can instigate beneficial long-term change that decreases vulnerability. However, policies emerging from such windows of opportunity must consider the diverse cause of catastrophe and avoid overreliance on top-down technocracy, instead promoting community engagement and autonomy for sustained success. Environmental history can contribute to improving the understanding of the limitations of technocracy and the importance of community agency in enhancing hazard understanding and effective early warning systems.

JFAST Drill Site--the experiment to drill the fault that slipped during the 9.1 Mw magnitude 2011 Tohoku Earthquake--on an active source cross-section sampling the fault. Thick lines are structures in the subducting plate, thin lines are in the overlying plate. www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...
Seismic reflection cross-section across the Japan Trench. Point where the Pacific plate begins to dive beneath Japan is located ~7 km to the east (right) of the vertical line labeled Site C0019 (the drilling location), note that there's a 2x vertical exaggeration on this cross-section to allow easier identification of structures.
The Y-axis is in meters depth, with the seafloor running from 6000 meters to ~7500 meters depth along the cross-section. The drill core reaches about 1000 meters below the seafloor. X-axis is a reference number for individual reflection traces spaced every 6.25 meters laterally.
The subducting plate is characterized by strong velocity contrasts that produce thick reflectors in the active source seismic data, the overlying plate is characterized mostly by weaker velocity contrasts that produce thinner reflectors. The subducting plate has a surface that looks like trapezoids--these are offsets in the surface produced by normal faults with several hundred meters of vertical displacement, created as the subducting plate was bent out the outer rise (~100 km to the east, not visible in the cross-section).
