Wrote about the Greg Mendez show I saw a couple weekends ago for Paste www.pastemagazine.com/music/gig-re...
Greg Mendez at recordBar (Saturday, August 22)
There was nothing on the stage except for a microphone, an acoustic guitar, and a metal folding chair with a lap-sized miniature synthesizer leaning against it. When Philly songwriter Greg Mendez ascended the two wooden steps to the stage at Kansas City's recordBar, there was no pomp or fanfare.
He grabbed his guitar, sat down, and played an hour-long set with few interruptions, save for the muttered "thank you" he'd relay to the room, which remained so quiet you could hear the bartender opening new beers for attendees, the crack of the pull-tab amplified by the hush. Most of his set drew from Beauty Land, his tender new record that moves from one brief, heart-rending song to the next at a rapid clip. Like the album itself,Mendez's set sauntered along with the nonchalance of someone who's witnessed enough tragedy to understand its magnitude without being leveled by it.
These are songs that couch you in their gentle sorrows of addiction and self-loathing, strangely comforting and discomfiting all at once. As the hundred or so of us left the bar to walk the downtown KC streets, each with our own destination, you could sense the collective weight leaving our bodies, sublimating into the atmosphere. For Greg Mendez, who was smoking a cigarette right outside the venue's doors, it was just another night on tour. —Grant Sharples
