This squid — transparent & beautiful — was spotted during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition, half a mile beneath the surface. It’s been 37 days & 14 hours since our last squid post. We had an inkling that it was time for some Cranchiidae, the family that comprises abt 60 species of glass squid.

I love all my cats, but this one is... A little special. She came from a family I used to work with when the dad forgot to spay the outdoor cat. She's the smallest of the three, and the youngest (the other two are twins), and finally coming around to prolonged cuddles. Happy Birthday Nobi Rose 🩵

I'm so used to photos where octopuses are blending in perfectly that I sometimes forget cuttlefish can do it too. 🦑📷ttsquid (inaturalist.ca/observations...)
A coral reef with an Australian Giant Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion apama) in the centre blending in perfectly. The water is a bit murky and the diver is using a light, but the light isn't on the cuttlefish so it doesn't help show it. The cuttlefish has a dark grey colour with a wavy light grey strip in the middle of its mantle going along its width. It has a dark spot on the back half of the mantle. The cuttlefish has its papillae raised. There is a sandy gravelly patch in the top left corner in the background of the photo.A coral reef with an Australian Giant Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion apama) in the centre blending in perfectly. One golden oyster looks like an erect penis where it rises from the center of a larger cluster of less phallic but still fairly phallic mushrooms. They grow on a log in a bright green spring forest. All photos by me

Before my trip to Anilao earlier this year, seeing an argonaut was pretty high on my bucket list. And on my second blackwater dive... voila! This is a female (the males are tiny). Argonauta sp., maybe A. hians but I really have no idea. 🦑 #Invertebrates #Blackwater
An argonaut viewed from the front. The mouth and one eye are clearly visible, as is the siphon at the bottom of the picture. The tentacles are pulled back so their tips are behind the body. The edge of the shell can be seen but is largely hidden.

A white door stands before you with a sign on it “welcome back to Earth” Another sign hangs near a lever “do not pull, kills all humans” You pull it “I saw that” says a voice “Oh. Does that mean I can’t go back?” You ask “Nah” it says “that’s just there so we know who to send back as cats”

Most squid species don't look after their eggs after they have been laid. But Bathyteuthis squids and black-eyed squids (Gonatus onyx) are an exception, as they will float through the sea brooding them. 🦑📷MBARI
A Bathyteuthis berryi mother floating in the ocean carrying an egg mass. The squid is deep red with beady black eyes. The egg mass is clear with light bulb or upside down tear drop shaped white eggs in the clear structure. The egg mass splits part way down, so it looks like a person's legs with one leg lifting the calf up.A female Black-eyed squid (Gonatus onyx) brooding eggs The squid is a light pink with a a more red could by the tip of its mantle. It has round eyes with a black pupil and blue iris. It is oriented vertically. Below it is a large mass of grey eggs that it is carrying in its arms. The eggs look like a bunch of ball bearings in in a bag. The egg mass is larger than the squid.A female Bathyteuthis carrying an egg mass. Today’s #MBARIFromTheVault video features Humboldt squid! These squid are formidable predators, often gathering in large groups for a feeding frenzy when food is plentiful. MBARI research suggests that they communicate with each other as they hunt by changing the pigment of their skin.

me: man, I could really use a salty snack with an interesting texture the delectable ruffle chip: 🦑📷Steven Kovacs
A blackwater photo of Chtenopteryx squid. It has translucent skin, but it is covered in brilliant orange chromatophores, which completely cover the mantle, most of the head, the upper arms and lower fins. Its arms and tentacles are neatly spread out. Its fins have fin ribs at regular intervals, making it look like a comb or a ruffle chip.

As promised here's the cover on its own. How many animals can you identify in this image? I'll post the answer... when I remember to do it. #Art #SciArt
An assortment of illustrated invertebrates, as colorful as if a paint shop spilled their entire stock on the floor. Some of the animals are tube shaped, others are frond shaped, frilly, shelly, a few leggy or tentacly. The edges of the image is balanced by geometric shapes, just as colorful. The animals names and more detailed shape descriptions will follow at a later date.
