Reminder too that these are the views of members who hadn’t already resigned. The European Association of Archaeologists must represent its membership. The #EAA Board must now reverse its decision, or resign. Europe knows, we don’t platform fascism, we don’t stay quiet on genocide.
Membership voting results showing that a clear majority disagree with the actions of the executive board.

Since the #EAA has buried the voting results deep in an email attachment, here they are:

These are the results of the per rollam vote following the Extraordinary Meeting of the #EAA. The outcome is overwhelming, with a very high level of participation. What will the Executive Board do now? There are some motions that should be implemented immediately. #SavetheEAA #archaeology

Following yesterday's EAA Special Meeting, I have submitted a complaint to the EAA Appeal and Anti-Harassment Committee. I post it here, with names redacted, for any members who were not present. Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out with messages of solidarity and support 🙏💓🙏
In spite of the Safe Space Policy being clearly stated at the beginning of the meeting, Prof. XXXXX targeted me by name, calling for my resignation from my position as Editor of the society's journal. Furthermore, his misuse of my title, referring to me as "Miss Kamash", felt deliberately demeaning. This intimidating behaviour explicitly contravenes the EAA Safe Space Policy. Although he was muted, for which I was grateful, I experienced a panic attack following his comments and did not feel safe to speak for the remainder of the meeting. This was further compounded by not only Prof. XXXXX being allowed to remain in the online meeting, but also being invited to take the floor again after the break. This gives me strong concerns about the effectiveness of the Safe Space Policy.

On a broader point about the effectiveness of the Safe Space Policy, I also note that members whose position aligned with that of Concerned EAA were repeatedly and persistently accused of anti-Semitism throughout the meeting. This is a serious accusation that should not be levelled without due care and evidentiary support. Its use as a blanket accusation seems to have been designed with the explicit aim of silencing and intimidating members aligned with Concerned EAA, which again contravenes the Safe Space Policy and should have been dealt with more robustly during the meeting.

Belgrade AM Organising committee announcement

3 September 2025

Members of the local Organising Committee of the Belgrade 2025 AM feel obliged to inform the AM delegates and all the EAA members that we were not consulted, nor officially informed of the decisions reached at the meetings of the EAA Executive Board held on August 22nd and September 1st 2025 prior to their official publication. Consequently, we did not endorse the instructions sent to the session organizers and the volunteers on September 2nd. We are well awiare that these instructions were revoked in the meantime, but since most of the volunteers are local students, bravely protesting for months and demanding the democratic rights to speak, we consider it particularly inappropriate to assign them the task to assess and/or deny that right to others.

If we as a field cannot stand together to reject the use of our work as part of a genocidal complex, if we cannot stand up against our colleagues who are directly complicit or at the very least trying to whitewash the reputations of their complicit institutions, then our field has learned nothing.

It is very sad to see @archaeologyeaa.bsky.social supporting Zionism and censorship. If there is no change and no serious apology, this will be the last time I participate here. Always against genocide and occupation. FREE PALESTINE. #EAA2025

In case anyone wants to use it… we are adding this (along other stuff) in our PPT today (alt text available):
The actions of the last days go against the "spirit and the ethos of the EAA" = reversing their decision about the involvement of complicit Israeli institutions in the conference goes against Statutes article II.8 (endorsing the destruction of cultural heritage); Code of practice 1b.8 (endorsing genocide and crimes against cultural heritage), Guiding principle iii-iv (harassment to reverse vote and silence participants); Principle 2a.3 (endorsing illegal excavations), and some other grey areas.
We deeply regret this decision and expect the EAA to take urgent measures ensuring a safe, democratic and ethical space for scholarly discussions. Archaeology IS political. STOP GENOCIDE!
