I wonder if these are the natural consequences of an era where videogames are the dominant cultural art form. We're all poorer for the triumph of mechanical systems and "lore" over character, structure, or prose

So, I tried out one of those “upload artwork of your original character and we’ll turn it into a figure” places. Very expensive, but pretty neat.

Legit funny story tho. In 1992, the LP ran Andre Marrou for President. I even went to hear him speak. Then it came out that Marrou had welched out on child support. I later saw a quote in Liberty where an LP operative moaned “next time we’re at least going to run a credit check on our nominee.” 🤦

Genuinely surprises and disappoints me how many ostensible libertarians turned out to be authoritarian-adjacent. Y’all were supposed to stop fascism, not join it! (And I’m disabling replies to this because I can already hear the sneering smugness to my left.) www.michiganpublic.org/politics-gov...

To be fair, “Les Misérables” is a title that’s been infamously resistant to localization, but it’s a famous exception to the rule.

010

Chris Adamson @invalidname.me · 29/09/2026

Indeed. By convention we use established English titles, even when they’re “not as good” as the original. For example, “Notre Dame de Paris“ works on multiple levels, but the nuance doesn’t translate, so we make do with “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.

110

Chris Adamson @invalidname.me · 29/09/2026

English titles should be the default *when interacting with other English-speakers*. If you and your counterparts agree otherwise, fine, but default to English. If you're obsessed with memorizing arbitrary runs of syllables in a language you don’t speak… yeah, that’s “fucking weeb” right there.

In “V”, the visitors came to Earth to take our water. I have to assume that it’s because the visitors have many AI data centers and have turned their world into a desert because they had computers making pictures of sharks wearing sneakers. This is a cautionary tale for our times.

As an American deeply familiar with our medical system, those “scare” prices in the ad are shocking underestimates. The idea of a coronary bypass only being £70K ($90K) must obviously be leaving out hospital charges and specialist fees like anesthesiologists. Multiply by 10 and it’d be realistic.

Hang on, though. PHEVs usually only take Level 1 charging because their batteries are only good for like 30-40 miles, so they don’t need fast charging like full BEVs do. PHEVs are mostly about charging at home and getting most or all of your round trip to work/skool from the battery.

Then it’s that much more an indictment, that they couldn’t find room for one more non-English show or one more animated title. It’s like they have a template of the type of show they want to fit, not which ones have the greatest merit. What’s the equivalent of “touch grass” for streaming?

Chris Adamson @invalidname.me · 25/09/2026

I don’t watch a ton of TV, but here are some worthy shows outside of the usual US “platinum era of TV” model: • 30 for 30 — Consistently solid documentaries • Women at War — French-made WWI war drama. More harrowing than Shōgun. • The View — A cornerstone of US discourse, overlooked because sexism.

Chris Adamson @invalidname.me · 25/09/2026

Even setting aside the English-only cultural bias, this list has pitifully little comedy (maybe 10 entries?), only three culture shows (all about cooking), one animated show (Bojack), and no room at all for: • News / current events / commentary • Science & nature • Sports • Children’s programming

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.
