you can do three things: 1) basic "where's the bathroom" familiarity with agents 2) fundamental concepts (may or may not be relevant in three months) 3) broad critical reasoning skills the road is long but it leads back to liberal arts, basically

I try not to be a doomer about the future, but sometimes I think about what a just world requires of an electorate (especially in the US) and then I get really bummed out.

Almost hope my Phillies somehow manage to miss the playoffs because it will be more memorable than losing a wildcard series. But because the baseball postseason is like 50% luck, if they get in they could also win the world series.

two things I think are true -Man City should receive maximal punishment for their decades of bad faith and cover-up -it is mostly neither here nor there in evaluating the "fairness" of the Premier League, which is among the most unfair sports leagues in history

There are many parallels including the fact that quality is remarkably worse. Going from professional journalism to podcasts and TikTok influencers is equivalent to the quality drop as software becomes vibe coded AI slop. But when the choice is between cheap, good and fast; good usually loses.

Going to need a new greatest living American essayist. RIP to one the best writers of my lifetime. I'm teaching "the chase" next week and spent time this summer reading some of her best stuff. Go read "Total Eclipse" in honor of her. This sucks.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

The most important thing about the data center backlash is that, in a time of intense polarization and micro-movements, it is astonishingly large—such a big tent mass politics that any time you try and an atomize or explain it you end up diminishing it. nytimes.com/2026/08/31/opi…

$2 million a year would cover the salaries of approximately 40 writing instructors (paid a reasonable, but still low wage). I would love to do a John Henry v. the steam shovel experiment to see which has superior effects, whatever this initiative discovers, or 40 additional writing instructors.

Passive voice is working overtime here. Trump cut taxes and started the war in Iran which have both massively ballooned the debt. NY Times makes it seem these things randomly happened and have “undercut” his plans to reduce the debt.

This is true. The Morrison Beloved reading is exceptional. I like her as the voice for all her audiobooks. Two things: - the novelist Donna Tart does a pretty good reading of the Charles Portis' novel True Grit. - Richard Poe and Frank Muller readings of Cormac McCarthy novels are excellent.

This is the same old "you can't solve weightlifting with a forklift" thing that happens again and again with current consumer uses of AI: the point of reading a book is not to finish the book easily, it's to READ the book, especially if the book asks you to do something that feels difficult

I think it’s hard to argue either that lockdowns were bad policy or that learning loss wasn’t real. We just have a society that makes no allowances for emergencies and affords no chance of making up. A lot of people are very mad about the effects of that without having any inclination to change it.

Oh, my God. Nicest guy. Was on the Pogues bill at Carnegie with him. His love of music was palpable, infectious, radiant. I’ve seldom seen a musician as connected to the moment of the song as he was that night, in deep communion with the song & the people playing it. So many felt it. Hard loss.

Since we're doing this: I enjoyed the Odyssey, and I think @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social is mostly right. I thought the dialogue was bad, the cinematography was great. Thought the message was somehow both didactic and beautiful, Pattinson was exceptional, and I liked the part with the cyclops.

CDC: Measles cases this year (2,318) already surpass 2025 numbers (2,289)--and 2025 was the worst year for measles in decades. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...
CDC chart shows measles numbers soaring in2025 and 2026 from extremely low levels that continued up till 2023 (with eruptions in 2015 and 2019 that were bigger than those low levels but much smaller than current levels.)
